I was always found science fascinating. So I wanted to be a scientist. In whatever way that could mean. But science degrees are the new arts degrees in terms of graduate job prospects. In the end I pivoted to engineering and it worked out really well.

A metrologist! I still find the weather and climate fascinating, and love wasting time on websites like Weather spark and Windy.

A hermit. The old-fashioned kind, living in a hut deep in the woods, far from any other people.

I wanted to be a lawyer for a while but I ended up deciding that law was too difficult and I'd rather not have to defend an asshole for example.

I wanted to be an interior designer! I still love decorating but I mostly use my Sims 4 game to make my dreams come true these days.

Exactly what I am. A Veterinary Professional.

[–] tangentism 5 points 1 year ago

With a different family.

[–] remington 5 points 1 year ago

A veterinarian.

I wanted to be a veterinarian so badly. Once I found out about wolf sanctuaries, I wanted to be a "wolf veterinarian" lol

I always wanted to be a space garbageman. I've read in some encyclopedia that there's a lot of space debris out there, and imagined that when I'd grow up people would realise there's a need to clean it up.

I like this! I think as a kid you were on to something and ahead of your time.

I was told to be a doctor. Like saving lifes and doing important stuff. However I always was the word kid disassembling electronic devices to see how they were made and how they worked. Now I am an electronic engineer, although I still see electronic systems as magic.

One of Jacques Cousteau's grown-up kids so I could be on their team of underwater explorers, then I was going to marry Jane Goodall's son and work with her (apparently my wee understanding of life had advanced to this as a way of acquiring a scientist parent but not yet understanding I could do it on my own). Then it was simply "move to Canada", no occupation specified. Age 12, I was back to primates and set on studying communication in monkeys or apes or another animal altogether because Penny was already doing that with Koko the gorilla. Somewhere in there was astronomy because Cosmos. I really liked science television because it showed me so many new and different things.
None of this worked out of course.

Nothing really, I was just fine doing kid stuff. Maybe that's why I have such a hard time nowadays.

When I was in kindergarten I wanted to be a teacher because I was convinced I coul do a better job being in charge than my teachers did lol Now I’m working on becoming self employed so I can be in charge of my work. It’s funny how that stayed with me.

A magician. I do not have the stage presence to even begin to pull that off.

A space explorer, until I was told that you could not be an astronaut if you have had dental cavities. Next in line was being a teacher, as it is one of the jobs that kids are really familiar with. I'm not an astronaut but I do teaching ocasionally, so part of the wish was fulfilled.

[–] thgs 2 points 1 year ago

I didn't know that. I thought I still had a chance!

An air force pilot amongst other things. Pursued a career in electronics/Comms instead and ended up working on aviation ATC ground systems.

[–] retronautickz 2 points 1 year ago

An opera singer and a forensic scientist

[–] Whimseymimple 2 points 1 year ago

Apparently I wanted to be a bus driver so I could go places. Eventually I wanted to be an astronaut. Now I'm a software engineer :)

[–] nickb333 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You succeeded. You drive data busses.

[–] CrispyPeach 2 points 1 year ago

Hah nice, didn't even think of that

[–] earthshatteringkboom 2 points 1 year ago

As a small kid I wanted to fly airplanes. As a medium kid I wanted to be a chef. I even had a design for the restaurant I wanted. As a big kid I went to college to be an aerospace engineer and instead fell in to an IT career.

[–] K_REY_C 2 points 1 year ago

Loads of different things depending on the year. The one I remember most was "sleight of hand magician"

Kid me found this question really intimidating, it already seemed very much like "what i was going to be" was going to depend on what was available.

I think i weirdly settled to tell everyone "radiology technician". Kid me figured that was a reasonable bar people would think i could do. Which i think isnt the point of the question!
