Sorry about the awkward title; I had a lot of trouble trying to word it.

Anyway, I got my first pair of glasses yesterday. I went in for my first eye exam in nearly a decade, and apparently I have mild astigmatism. So for the past day I've been getting used to the sensation of having glasses on (I never cared for sunglasses, personally; I've always found them hard to see in) and getting a touch of euphoria about how they conceal the brow somewhat. But then it kinda hit me that I don't really know anything about glasses, having not used them until age 36. I probably should have asked some questions about it when I picked them up, but I was kinda sick and didn't want to stick around there too long.

I know I could just google it, but google sucks now, plus, I may as well use the AskBeehaw platform, it's pretty quiet.

I love the idea of supporting small business and quality, handcrafted items. But Etsy seems to be more focused on drop shipping and it becomes a hassle to investigate every item I purchase to determine whether it ships from China or not.

I've recently gotten into the thrifting/antiquing bug myself and have lucked out on some amazing items. (by my standards) What are your favorite finds and why?

My current favorite is a "Milan Leather" leather jacket with a UK/Ireland phone number for customer service on it's care tag. (I live in the USA for context) I snagged it for $28 dollars and can't wait to wear it this winter.

If anyone knows more about that Milan Leather brand I'd love to know more about when that company was around so I can date just how old the jacket is.

In the past few weeks I feel like I've seen a lot more conservative comments being posted on Beehaw. Where before it seemed like occasionally some dazed right-winger would wander through now and then, it now seems a bit more like they specifically show up to any thread that brushes up against one of their pet issues.

The most recent example I've noticed is around the stuff with the Ladybird devs being weird about being asked to use inclusive pronouns, but it seems like a pattern.

Has anyone else noticed this? Any thoughts on a course of action other than blocking them all individually or reporting particularly grievous examples?

I really would be disappointed to see every single thread here slowly inundated with pettiness and hate.

I've been using Sync for a while, but it repeatedly hits an error when I try to submit posts to Beehaw. I have not tried other instances, but I am assuming this issue is specific to Sync. Getting really sick of drafting posts and then having to discard them because the app errors out 🤦

hi there. I'm new. I've recently migrated from kbin.social (RIP) in the hopes of filling that big empty hole in my webs that reddit left after The Troubles.

First impressions after a week of use:

• Beehaw feels a little lonely. Not a lot of activity. Same posts on my subscriptions front page throughout the day with little movement on upvotes and comments. It's the summer in the north so maybe people have better things to do with their time, but I am wondering, does it pick up?
• Fewer users than kbin? It feels like there are smaller numbers on the Communities subscriptions than I'm used to on kbin. Granted, kbin was inundated with spammers and bot accounts over the last couple of months so those numbers are probably not as real as I'd like them to be, and I appreciate Beehaw's limits on new members by pushing a signup form and a review process. A social network needs users though.
• Subscribing across instances feels weird. Maybe it's the instance (lemmy.ca) but I tried following a couple of communities from there and my subscription was marked "Pending". Are we defederated?

So, my Ask is this: Do you have any recommendations for a newbie at Beehaw to make the most of my experience here? Are there any non-obvious Communities I should join? I'm looking for friends and fun. Where do?

I'm trying to play Rain World with a friend, but steam remote play doesn't seem to be working. I've managed to play online with friends on other games, though I dont thing those would have been using Steam Remote Play. Whenever I right click my friend's steam name and click "invite to play" or whatever its called, it does nothing. I can invite him to watch me play, and watch him play, but the invite to play doesn't work. Clicking his invites also does nothing, regardless of whether the game is open or closed. I have played Rain World with my friend when I was still using windows, and I'm wondering if this is just a linux problem. Has anyone encountered the same problem? Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm having a really specific problem trying to play a game with my friend on fedora linux, and the internet seems to hold no wisdom for me. Can I ask for tech support here, or on the gaming community? I'm used to reddit where posts get deleted for being off topic, and often asking in a specific community is also considered off topic, so I'm trying to NOT have my thing deleted so i can play rain world with my friend.

Reddit is broken. It's potential often derailed. I'm working on what's wrong and why with online raw reply and discussion places like reddit and Beehaw, with this very "Body" section, where the OP can expand their reason for posting & pinned to the top, one such correction.

Other issues include what I call "Clutter", like spelling, minor details & and grammar corrections, which should be temporary and separate, so we improve our writing without ego or disruption to the main experience. You want to keep the young from becoming online brats like we all succumb to? Make a better system.

So what's a good sub to start such discussions?
