Movado is an overpriced brand so chances are you might actually end up getting him something nicer

Yes, I wear a timex right now. I don't even look at my automatic watches at the moment. It's a 100dollar timex waterbury, don't care that it's cheap
Not necessarily a cheap/expensive brand issue. More of a personal taste or interest/enthusiast issue.
I'm sure he would appreciate and value any watch you give him. He may wear it regularly because he appreciates it. Or he may wear it just to make you happy.
If he has a lot of watches then having whichever one you get him in the collection is not a bad thing. But he probably won't drop the other watches and just wear yours. He will probably wear it from time to time.
Watch enthusiasts can have very specific tastes, so I usually tell people it's best to have the recipient pick out the watch. Anyway, it's great that you are making such an effort to get him the gift. Good luck to you.
You should wear a watch for it's personality, not it's value. I seen uber priced watches that I would pick a high end Timex over ($160), especially if it is a super thin timepiece (I like my watches thick).
Hey yall I saw people saying Movado he’s wearing is cheap which surprised me cuz as what I saw on the website, it’s lowest price is already 700. The watches of other brands I’m looking at is currently on BF sales which make them around 200 that’s why I was asking 😣
Btw, I really appreciate all of your answers. I, in fact, did send a pictures of those watches I was looking at to him and asked which one he likes. He said anything so ig he would be happy with anything I got for him
Once again, thank you so much for all the help 💞
You seem like a really thoughtful person. I bet your dad will be feeling really loved just because you’re taking so much time and thinking of him. Get him a really solid Seiko, and he’ll wear it with pride.
I just blew $415 on a Citizen. The most I have ever spent on a watch. The last few days I find myself looking at $60 divers, while also missing my free Casio calculator watch. Dollar value ≠ enjoyment value.
The only Seiko I have is a gift from my daughter. Means more to me than my $10k JLC. I'm sure your dad will love what you choose for him.
I have no problem going from my $1400 watch to my $200 watch, price isn't a deciding factor when I choose what watch to wear.
Don't know. I can tell you I just bought a $7400 watch...and I just bought a $180 watch.
Personally I don’t think it’s the cost, it’s how much you enjoy the watch, and who it’s from. The $200 Tissot from my Grandfather means more than the Patek’s I’ve owned.
Watches tell stories. Gift watches are the best. Do some research though. Dont just get any watch. Grab something that you think hell like or has some personality.
Its gotta show some thought to make it personal.
My current collection includes a tissot 1948, a simple movado museum, a larsen and jennings, and 5 sangins (i really dig sangin right now)
Of those, the Movado, Larsen, Tissot, are not my most often worn. My Sangin Neptune and Hydra are probably my most attention grabby, but
The 1 mo, 2 larsen, 3 tissot, and 4 sangin merlin (second least expensive sangin in the lineup-solar quartz) are also my most prized, never ever sell watches i own.
1 Gift from mom, 2 3 gift from fiancee now wife , and 4 wore to hospital for daughter’s birth
Here’s a funny one, I love speedys and have 3. Along with a case full of other “expensive” watches. I wear a f’ing orient all the time hahaha. I’m wearing a polar today.
Who cares what they cost, the fact that you bought it for him will mean it probably is more valuable to him than anything
Your dad will appreciate anything you get for him. It's the though that counts not the item itself.
Take a look at this Ed Sheeren collection video and listen closely at 6:25. He has a collection worth millions with unique pieces made for him, yet he still cherishes the first cheap quartz watch he got for it's sentimental value. He would sell EVERYTHING for that watch.
Absolutely, but that's just me. I've literally bought $3,000 and $300 watches on the same shopping trip.
Get him chrono/dress/diver or G-Shock
Wouldn't really think well of a Movado. Bulova makes some nice high-precision quartz models. A 7s26 Seiko 5 would be interesting, perhaps. Not that you can't find Bulova/Citizen/Seiko (and Casio) more expensive than some Movados. I also just ordered a small number of Casios, and an Armitron.
You may find gray-market dealers have Movados, some under $300, that may be worth considering, if you what to get him a Movado.
Their laurels are pretty seedy. They basically stole the design they're most famous for from the original designer. Nathan George Horwitt designed the original "Museum Watch" and shopped the design around to various manufacturers. Nobody bit so he had a few watches made for him at his own cost. One of them was eventually acquired by MoMA, which is where the "Museum" name comes from.
How does Movado come into it? They made unlicensed copies of Horwitt's watch using cheap movements. Basically, counterfeits. He took them to court but after years of legal wrangling and arguments, he settled with Movado for a measly $29,000 in 1975.
They pretty much waited until Horwitt died to begin heavy marketing of the design.
Movado is a really shitty company.
I see. Thanks, didn't know Movado did that. Well, 1975 $29K debased US currency is 2013 nearly $166K debased US currency, 471.9%.
Enjoyability is independent of price. Finishing, heritage, tolerances, complications - these are related to price. But when it comes down to “Do I like this watch and will I wear it?” - that’s unrelated to price.
I guess story time but....
When my dad got married he was gifted a rolex and he wore that for a long time. For reasons that I don't quite know, he decided that the rolex was a pain in the ass to wear and he's switched watches since then. But I remember as a kid for the longest time, my dad wore a cheap casio diver for a long long time. That's just what he wore. So I guess he did switch from an expensive brand to a cheaper brand.
Personal opinion? I currently wear a BB58 as my daily driver. But to be honest, I can appreciate a lot of cheaper watches no problem. From time to time you'll catch me wearing my Hamilton or Kuoe watch. Both watches are a fraction of the price of the bb58 but I still wear them. Why? Because I like the way they look. I like the way all my watches look, price doesn't matter. At the end of the day I will never wear a Richard Mille watch because I think they're ugly as fuck.
Truthfully speaking......alright watches are cool. Luxury brands are cool. But at the end of the day it's just a watch and I think that's what a lot of people get to. So then they switch out to a cheaper watch for a variety of reasons. We like to get into discussions about movement and finishing and accuracy and so on and so on? But really it's just a watch. Those things are stupid. We just need something to tell the time.
Whatever you get your dad, I'm sure he'll be happy to wear it. The emotional attachment of you giving him a watch is going to be worth more than any other watch he owns.
First of all. Whoever doesn't like a gift is awkward. And I am sure if you gifted him a set of shoelaces he would still love them.
Secondly if he is a real enthusiast he will like a good looking watch no matter the cost. I think it comes down to finding the right piece for him. Something different from what he owns but within the bounds of his style.
Hamilton has some nice watches,I’m sure your dad would love anything from you.
i wear my sinn 10x more than my omega speedmaster because the sinn is way more rugged
Can't you think f any other gift to get your dad than a watch that he may not wear?
If my son gave me a Chinese knockoff SpongeBob watch that yelled obscenities every other day at 3:42pm through a busted up speaker I’d still wear the everloving fuck out of it. He’ll love what you give him because it was from you. Brand doesn’t matter here.
You need to understand why he bought that watch and why does he need another. If he bought a more expensive watch bc he liked it and he could, then price isn’t a factor. If he loves brands then that is a problem.
Anything will do esp it is a gift from beloved son. However I would suggest a hamilton
