the big stickied thread is getting cluttered with lots of new people and the "how was your week" thread isn't a great fit for introductions, so it seems about time to make this a dedicated thread of its own so peoples' posts aren't getting lost.

tell us a little bit about yourself, folks. don't gotta be too specific or revealing, just whatever you want to put out there. this'll be a good way of getting to know all the people you're now on here with

Howdo champions!

I’m Darren. He/him. I live right in the middle of the south of England with my wife, where I work in quality and health and safety management.

I have a background in radio, podcasting, and welding, so if you want any tips on those very connected subjects, I’m your man. Music is my main love, but I can’t play a note.

I have ADHD, which is why I’ve been posting on here so much instead of doing what I’m getting paid to do.

I feel that last part, luckily my job only really requires 3 hours of work and the rest is just trying to look busy.

Hello, I'm Butterbee. I'm a transwoman in her 40's who joined Beehaw at the end of January and have been mostly just browsing. My activity should be picking up; It's energizing seeing all the new folk come by!

I'm into -3d art, mostly textures and materials but I have an appreciation for all aspects of the craft. -Gaming! I play euro truck sim 2, rimworld, and Overwatch though that's been less and less and less and now practically none thanks to the sad state Blizzard has put themselves, their employees, and their games in. But I love that colourful optimistic heroic aesthetic. Maybe I'll find another game with the same vibe. I will also play just about any coop game with friends. -Urbanism. I'm more on the NotJustBikes side than F*KCars. I love my ebike and want to see more changes in my community that allow me to get around without using an automobile. If we get an urbanist community here, I'll be in there. -I am also fond of bees.

I can also bee found at @Butterbee@mastodon.art

Beeeehaw!!

I am also a redditor who came here yesterday. I am a snake and reptile loving lady (she/her) with ADHD who gets really obsessed with new and novel things, so of course I signed up for several different fediverse sites yesterday and am getting the hang of them.

For this site, I'm mainly looking for a kinder, smaller Reddit. I grew up on the internet in the early to mid 2000s and I really miss the smaller, tight-knit forum communities that were the norm back then. A small niche subreddit scratched that itch somewhat, but I still never really learned who the individual people in my frequented subreddits were, you know? It felt like less of a community.

My main hobbies are games (MMOs, simulators, cozy games, etc), crafts (cross stitch right now, but also crochet and knitting), and reading.

[–] UngodlyAudrey 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I'm Audrey, a long time Reddit user who signed up yesterday. I initially joined Reddit during the collapse of Digg, so, yeah, I've been there a while. I also dumped Twitter shortly after Elon Musk took over and switched to Mastodon; that was my first experience with the Fediverse. So far, I've had nothing but good experiences with the people I have met on fedi, and I hope that continues here.

Anyway, I am a 35 year old trans woman who lives in the Pacific Northwest, and my interests include video games(both modern and retro), movies(particularly the so bad it good kind), sports(well, I used to care more than I do, I only follow Seattle teams now), books(sci-fi, fantasy, history), and tech(to a degree). I do stream on Twitch from time to time, and I'm planning on switching to Linux when I build my new computer soon.

I can also be found on Mastodon at @UngodlyAudrey@retro.pizza

Nice to meet you all!

[–] Butterbee 13 points 1 year ago

Happy pride! As a fellow trans woman I've found beehaw to be pretty welcoming. I'll see you in the gaming community :D

[–] alyaza 17 points 1 year ago (3 children)

i would be remiss to not start this off myself: i'm alyaza, one of the three admins here (and probably the one you're most likely to interact with day-to-day, although i have a lot going on). i am nonbinary and my pronouns are they or she, although i can't imagine in most contexts on here you'd need to use them. i find a lot of stuff interesting, which i think reflects in the pretty eclectic mixture of stuff i post on here. i also read a lot, so if you're interested in non-fiction book suggestions i would probably be a good person to turn to.

hello, everyone!

like many, i'm a soon-to-be former redditor (as was a Digger before that). I'm a freelance designer living in Brooklyn, nyc. i like star trek, star wars, and most other sci-fi. I'm also an LGBTQ+ activist and have been fighting for LGBTQ+ equality for over 25 years. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

[–] wintermute 14 points 1 year ago

Hey all! never been much of a poster, so I'm hesitant to put down too much of myself to start out. I've been passively invested in FOSS communities and technologies for a while, and curious about decentralized, federated services like mastodon for as long as I've known about them, but mastodon is too busy for me so I'm glad I've found myself here :3

I don't expect to be too proactive in the community, but when I do engage, I'll do my best to respond when responded to. The small community aspect, like the forum days of old others have mentioned in this thread, is compelling to me and I want to be true to it!

Call me wintermute, or winter im happy to respond to either :) Maybe I'll follow up with interests, pronouns if I warm up to putting myself out there, or maybe you'll just have to get to know me by the topics I can't help but weigh in on ;v

[–] leetnewb 13 points 1 year ago

leetnewb, new as of today 6/1/23. Long-time follower of the open source Lemmy project. Redditor of ~13 years and forum person for many year prior. Have had the hope that communities would eventually migrate to platforms such as this. Interests are pretty mundane: gardening, tennis, some tech and hobby programming. Usually more interested in reading than commenting.

[–] big_tabb 13 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Hi everyone, I'm big_tabb! Like several other commenters here, I'm a Reddit user who is dissatisfied with their current policies and am looking to explore the federated space more. I find myself missing the smaller-forum feel more and more and am hoping Beehaw scratches that itch.

I am a backend developer by trade and am passionate about all things programming, gaming, and tech in general (especially if that tech is open source.) I'm also a pretty big reader, mainly sci-fi and fantasy. On the more personal side, I am in my late twenties, pronouns he/him. In a few months I will be becoming a Dad for the first time so that is the main focus of my life right now; when not with family or working, at the moment you can mainly catch me playing Tears of the Kingdom.

Feel free to reach out and chat - looking forward to getting to know this space and you all!

Another Reddit migrator here. I'm 25, trans nb. I'm an artist, and my hobbies include film, books, games and anime. More specifically I love horror movies/books and I play loads of things from Splatoon to Minecraft to Dwarf Fortress. Glad to be here :)

[–] Hyperz 13 points 1 year ago

I’m Hyperz and I come from the land of waffles, chocolate, fries and beer (Belgium). Was a reader of Reddit for about 15 years and a member for about 11 of those years. Before that I used to be very active on some niche forums until Reddit went Pac-Man on traditional forums. With the way Reddit was going the last few years, and especially now with the incoming API changes, I’ve decided I don’t want to support that anti-user platform anymore. I’m glad I found out about Lemmy (can’t believe I hadn’t heard of it before!) because not only does it look like a viable alternative to Reddit, it also brings back some of the aspects I’ve been missing from the old forum days.

[–] Tecknich 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hello everyone! Long time reddit lurker here coming in to check out this new part of the internet. Currently in university for CS and love technology, computer hardware, tennis, videogames, and more recently cars.

Really like the idea of these smaller, more tight nit communities that exist on their own. Excited to see where this goes.

[–] followthewhiterabbit 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It has a feeling of the 'older' internet, doesn't it?!

I collect some older 486's myself, since I'm more of a hardware fan than software (if that makes sense!). Have you seen Halt and Catch Fire? If you're a fan of computers, their history, the builds and all that, the series if 100% worth your time!

@alyaza Hi there. I am also another person seeking an alternative to Reddit. I had been looking at the Fediverse from a distance for a bit but never jumped on board until now. The thought of a megacorporation ruining my user experience for the sake of their pocketbooks was enough for me.
I'm still fumbling around trying to figure things out but I'm having a good time so far.
I look forward to this little digital adventure.

[–] followthewhiterabbit 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Hi everyone!!

As with 99% of those here in this thread, a reddit user and so unenthused about the idea of not being able to choose my app to moderate or scroll. I've finally made the jump. My friends all think I am nuts, but I'm set on it. I take privacy and FOSS seriously!

I've been on Mastodon twice before, but this time I think I'm making it official, and loving how Lemmy is so far <3

I'm a Linux enthusiast, gamer (just got a Steam Deck! - BoTW via CEMU as Linkle, Stray and now starting the download for Skyrim, hoping that I can mod the game? The only YT video I checked out said that I need it installed on the SSD to work, which is hard since I have the 64gb version), I live for summer. Coffee is my reason for living.

Honestly joining up here feels as good as it did when I ditched the typical socials.

Can't wait to get to know you all!

Hello everyone! I’m Cave, any pronouns (really). I’m a former redditor of 6~ years and have never been an active poster, but I plan on changing that now with a smaller community. I’m a big fan of open source and free software, but I also really like sewing, gaming (mainly idle games and metroidvanias), hiking, cooking, and gardening. I also like to read.

[–] jdw 12 points 1 year ago

Hi all, I’m jdw, yet another Reddit refugee. After being on Reddit for 13 years (and being a Gold subscriber for the last ten of those), I’ve finally had enough of it, and they’ve showed their colours only too well by their actions towards third party clients. I’ve set up a monthly sub with OpenCollective instead!

I’m more of a reader than a poster, but I occasionally comment on things.

[–] birdy 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi, I'm birdy; a new user who joined yesterday. I've been meaning to look into lemmy for a while. Finally decided to actually get around to doing it.

My interests that come to mind right now are some sports, board games, reading, and technology.

happy to be here and see how this whole fediverse thing works!

Reddit migrator here i like reading quite a bit aswell as learning new skills (i am currently trying to learn 3D modelling) i was mainly using reddit as a way to browse story subreddits like nosleep however the recent mobile app fiasco made me switch as im not willing to use their app

[–] Reddit_Refugee2023 11 points 1 year ago

Hi all, as you can see another Reddit refugee. Been on Reddit for 10 years, more of a lurker but trying to be more active on here. Still figuring things out on here. Im kind of a nerd with interest in MTG, Warhammer 40k, video games and dungeons and dragons.

[–] dax 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

howdy! my username is my actual first name. i'm a software engineer in research in the seattle metro. i'm a cis hetero white guy in my 4th decade and i just recently found out i'm high functioning autistic with a boatload of childhood ptsd that makes it hard for me to be in super social public spaces or anywhere i might inconvenience others by my existence.

i explicitly chose beehaw because i was tired of all the fucking nazis and toxic masculinity asshats traipsing around reddit, and i specifically wanted to be in a community where LGBTQIA+ were explicitly made to feel like they belong.

i like reading, woodworking, pc gaming, ice hockey, my dogs, making and eating good food, slice of life anime and my wife. even if i didnt get paid in golden yachts for my labor i'd still probably be writing code every single day, because it's just what i do. i'm most happy solving problems, proviso there's no stress or anxiety around it, because i manufacture all the stress and anxiety the human being needs to survive on it's own

Hello hello! Like a lot, I’m a long time redditor that decided to look for an alternative after their recent API announcements. Online communities I’m in call me Mindless. I’m a big technology and video game fan (older Pokemon games are my absolute jam). I spend a chunk of my time mentoring a local robotics team and, if I’m not doing that, I’m at the track racing karts!

So far I’ve really enjoyed the feeling of a smaller lemmy communities and hope to stay active here!

[–] OrcDev 10 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I’m still setting up here, but hello! I go by Dev (he/him), and like a few others, I’m kind of obsessed with trying out new internet spaces, and a friend recommended this place!

Online, I play a lot of MMOs, but I’m also a tech librarian for work alongside being in a professional symphonic band!

I’m not too good at intros, but nice to meet you all!

Heyo, another lost redditor here. Really interested in this whole fediverse thing at a time when I’m also questioning how much social media I actually need in the end :)

Interested in video games, board gaming, entertainment (movies, TV, reading), and more often than not, taking care of a rambunctious child. Excited to get involved where possible in the community and see how it grows!

[–] mifuyne 10 points 1 year ago

Hello. This is another one of my attempts to move over from Reddit. I suspect it’ll be a rather slow shift, but I hope it sticks this time. This community seems more relaxed. Responses I’ve seen in some threads comes across as more organic rather than a structured discussion. Nothing wrong with a structured discussion but it can feel a bit tiring from time to time. I hope the relaxed atmosphere will help me be more engaged with you all!

I’m currently expanding my software development knowledge in a bid to change careers. I know, terrible timing.

This shift have also got me to look at other federated software/communities more. I really like the idea of decentralizing communities like this, and still can communicate with each other. It avoids everyone relying on any one site, or company, to build their community. Really lessens the likelihood of what we’re seeing with Reddit (and Twitter).

I’ve listed some of my other fediverse accounts in my bio if anyone’s curious! I’m hoping to add more, like a webserial, or journals for my solo TTRPG campaigns (via writefreely).

I look forward to meeting and experiencing more of the community.

[–] Gaywallet 10 points 1 year ago (7 children)

It's been awhile since I've introduced myself, so I guess I'll give this a quick whirl.

On the internet I often go by Gaywallet but you can also refer to me as bunny. I'm 35, non-binary (they/them), poly, bay area native residing in SF. I spend a lot of my free time socializing, going to raves or finding EDM to dance to or maintaining relationships with my partners. If I'm unable to occupy my time with any of those I'm either working or consuming media of different sorts - I read a lot of science books and journals, watch plenty of TV and movies, and DJ occasionally. I'm a data scientist in healthcare by trade. I'm passionate about diversity and equity, especially in the healthcare space, but given that I've helped a lot with this websites ethos and charge, healthcare is not the only place where I try to champion equity and work towards a nicer, more humane future.

There's already quite a few usernames I recognize from Reddit in this thread and the most recent batch, and I'm glad to see you all over here. 💜

Hey, I go by a lot of names but axonPotential/axon works for me. I'm nonbinary and prefer being referred to as they/he. I like art, writing, animals, and gaming. I also enjoy goth music and am a beginner programmer.

Came here because of the Reddit API nonsense, though the site hasn't been all that great for a while so it's kind of a final nail in the coffin deal

[–] VioletteRei 10 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Well, a proper introduction have to be. Hello everyone, you can call me Violette, i'm a young trans woman, my first language is french, I would love to interact with a lot of you in that friendly-space and my hobbies are books, comicbooks (specially Marvel), video games, skateboarding, Lego and technology in a whole (one of the reason I got on Lemmy, it's a "new" technological thing!)

[–] EnglishMobster 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hello!

I've been a Redditor for 11 years - I was even in the Century Club subreddit (it's not nearly as interesting as you probably think it is).

I work as a AAA game programmer. I previously worked on the Battlefield series, but EA laid me off earlier this year as part of them shutting down my former studio. Now I'm working on a new AAA title I can't really talk about.

Before I worked in the AAA space, I worked at Disneyland! I used to be a skipper on the World-Famous Jungle Cruise. I also worked as a host at the Tiki Room (fun fact: technically, this is considered part of the Jungle Cruise), a conductor on the Disneyland Railroad, and an "archaeologist" on the Indiana Jones ride they have there (although I disliked working Indy).

As a hobby, I have a model train layout. It's in N-Scale (1:160). I'm also part of a local model railroad club that periodically meets up and puts together modular layouts. We meet at local convention centers and whatnot, where we string together a bunch of 4x2-foot layout sections that we each individually own/maintain and make one big mega-layout.

I'm super excited to be here!

[–] The_Hunted_One 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hey beehaw,

I go primarily by Hunted online, I’m a software dev from Canada, coming over because of the Reddit app shutdown.

I’m in my early 30s, kinda new dad (18 months). When work and family aren’t occupying my attention, I’m pretty big into gaming, where I frequently host dedicated servers for games with friends, but am always open for making new gaming friends.

Also pretty big into TTRPG gaming, started with D&D 5e, then moved to Pathfinder 2e about 2 years ago, just hit level 20 for the first time in a TTRPG, and am currently gearing up for GM'ing an adventure for some local friends.

I’m new to Lemmy and federated things in general, so currently looking for a solid how-to for how to navigate around and get content. Also keeping an eye out for an android app for browsing, as the one I tried kept losing my connection and eating comments

[–] mint 9 points 1 year ago

i'm mint, u may have seen me on Cohost as well. i actually used reddit quite frequently for news aggregation. don't have to tell u why that's starting to go out the window lol. lemmy seems like a neat alternative!

I'm 29, officially getting my Masters in UI/UX next Friday, and I like vidja, music, tech, reading, and writing. i have a blog that I've been posting on for an ungodly amount of time at this point, I make music on Bandcamp, and I like to make games every once and a while. I'd describe myself as "prolific" - not in the sense that I'm popular, but that I just love making things. in fact, mintmakesthings was my twitter handle before I dipped from there too.

lastly, I'm a virtual creator that streams on Twitch! i haven't recently, but that'll be picking up soon since SFVI is dropping.

(I didn't link any of that stuff because uh I dunno it feels a lil too self-promo-y but if anyone wants to see any of it let me know!)

[–] Tammanytiger 9 points 1 year ago

Howdy beehaw,

I'm Tammany Tiger - you can call me Tammany, or Tiger, or both, I really don't mind. If I like you then you may call me Tammy. My pronouns are He/Him, but I don't care/mind if you use plural pronouns on me. Mid 20's. Currently finishing up higher education at the masters level. From the U S of A.

I'm into vidja gaems, gardening, economics, board and table top games, writing, and reading! Used to do DND but I sucked at it - hopefully I can get a hang of it one day. Otherwise I'm pretty open minded, and won't judge you too harshly. Just don't be a needless jerk and we'll be great!

I'm here cause I'm a Reddit refugee, like many, but I'm excited to call this place home.

[–] imaginecat22 9 points 1 year ago

I'm more of the lurker type, but I suspect posting and activity will attract more users, so I'll suck it up for now.

Also want to test the comment UI.

Use whatever pronouns feel natural; I usually go for he/him irl because it's easy and simple.

I'm a Reddit refugee like everyone else. I like books, writing, programming, politics, and many more.

Hoping this site will be close enough to Reddit that the muscle-memory, dopaminergic circuits will easily switch to coming here for that delicious fucking content (and let's be honest, some fucking-content) instead of the fun-but-crazy site that has consistently let me down over the past ~10-15 years.

Here's to the future, y'all 🥂

[–] prism@lemmy.one 8 points 1 year ago

hey! I’m just another Reddit refugee outraged at their new policies, I guess companies just be companying. Migrated over here along with the privacyguides community, so as you could probably guess my interests include wearing a tinfoil hat, programming and selfhosting. I am more of a lurker than a commenter, but I hope that might change with lemmy given the smaller community feeling :)

[–] Hexorg 8 points 1 year ago

Hello all! Fellow Reddit-abandoneer here. I’m on mastodon as @hexorg@techhub.social. I have a PhD in cyber security and I specialize in automated binary analysis. I have a collection of laserdiscs and I’m making a 90s themed arcade in my shed.

[–] Cragsand 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Howdy everyone!

I'm Cragsand, washed up roleplayer and science nerd. I'm mostly involved in Twitch streaming communities and post content and highlights and memes related to them over on Reddit.

Currently checking out open source and federated alternatives with the whole Reddit charging obscene amounts for API access, basically killing off all of their third party clients.🔥 Glanced at Lemmy but had some concerns regarding the bigger instances... Another project I checked out was KBin which looks promising but has some work cutout to improve their UI.

The subreddit I'm mostly involved in is this streaming/roleplay subreddit:

Would sharing comedic and sometimes mature/borderline nsfw clips and similar even fit in here? Not sure if this is the right place to ask either but appreciate advice! 😉

Cheers

Crag

[–] baronvonj 8 points 1 year ago (7 children)

I went from Slashdot to Fark to Digg to Reddit. Already found the Fediverse as @baronvonj@mastodon.online after recent changes over on Twitter.

As my user bio says I dabble in guitar and watch rugby (US MLR, go SaberCats) and hockey (NHL). For reading it's mostly fantasy, with The Witcher and Discworld being my most recent books, but I also enjoy scifi. I tend to be more visual (ie TV and movies) due to ADHD though. Video games with a strong narrative are great. Games like the Horizon series (Zero Dawn, Forbidden West), Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Witcher, and Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Probably goes without saying, but, I’m here from Reddit. After just over 13 years there, seeing the slowly declining quality of posts and information, I’m hopeful that a smaller de-/less- centralized community-of-communities can give the old reddit experience :) And even if it can’t, any new experience will be great!

I’m mostly a programmer/gamer, studying for my MSc in computer science, but I’m thinking I might switch to a hybrid compsci/hardware topic for a PhD (something like static guarantees in HDLs is very interesting to me, but idk yet). I also quite like billiards and have been trying hard to learn French for about 2 years now.

Helloooooooooooooooo out there!

Mid-20s queer trans lesbian here, yet another girl fleeing frantically from Reddit, but glad to have found a space that's such a refreshing contrast from social media nowadays. (A social space? Being social? Imagine that!)

I am an extremely avid gamer (FFXIV being the game of choice for me right now), and a board gamer too, for that matter! I'm also finding myself down an anime/manga hyperfixation right now... and honestly being queer is a bit more of my personality than I might like to admit. Really, I'm hoping to find a sense of community here, and meet some cool folks, especially queer folks, in the process.

Immensely glad to be here!

Good day all! I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

I'm a father of two little boys, husband, lover and teacher of FOSS.

Ex-Red Hatter for support. Currently performance IT analyst.

I think free and open source software is the only way forward in the world. Especially when it comes to these big social networks. The Fediverse is the only way, which is why I've been on Mastodon for a few years. Tried Lemmy, but was turned away from it. So happy to BEE here. :-D <3

[–] hamtaro 8 points 1 year ago

Hi, just another refugee. Not much to say other than the fact I’ve used Reddit for a few years at this point, almost solely through Apollo. This change was enough to get me to sign up, so hello I guess

[–] HarvesterOfEyes@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Hi! I guess you can call me a recurring reddit refugee, as this is like the third time I try to move away from that site to alternatives that feel friendlier and where it feels like you can have more genuine interactions with people. I guess you can still have that experience in smaller subreddits but reddit as a whole also feels increasingly like a site that tries to compete with other popular social media platforms. And that's really not for me.

So I've tried other reddit-like platforms like whoaverse, before it renamed itself to voat and became filled with nazis; Empeopled, which had a really nice community, but eventually folded; Tildes, which was pretty nice but the level of discourse felt a bit...too much, for lack of better wording. Every post read like a essay or something (and not very interesting ones, for the most part), and everyone wanted to discuss about everything under the sun. I have nothing against that, mind you, but I also don't have much free time or willpower to do that.

And last but not least, Lemmy. When I found out about it, there was only lemmy.ml, so I registered on that instance. Even though I do lean left on the political spectrum, some of the stuff I read on there felt a bit uncomfortable to read. But in general, the site was friendly to use, the community seemed cool, nonetheless, passionate about open-source and libre software, which I also am. Beehaw, so far, seems to have all the advantages I've mentioned before, without the caveats...that I've also mentioned before. I know nothing is perfect, and seems to be even more true with these kinds of platforms but so far so good :).

Anyway, I'm a 34 year old librarian, who is interested in computer science, Linux and open-source software. On the other hand, I also love games and have been getting into fighting games lately, which are decidedly not open-source but I'm no Richard Stallmann in that regard. Aside from that, love reading (especially about history), music, movies and tv shows, namely anime. Also love me some good manga.

I'll probably remain a lurker for the most part but will also try and participate as much as time allows.

HI all! Another from Reddit. In my mid 40's, west coast US, and was really looking for a community like this.

I was a gaming geek growing up (Commodore 64 through all current gen consoles) and even worked in the industry as a game tester in the late 90's to early 00's. Grew up with an uncle working for IBM in the early 80's and was exposed to REALLY early personal computers when they were not a "thing" yet and I have loved them ever since.

Other hobbies / interests are graphic design, photography, and for work I use AutoCAD and Revit as a designer. It was not what I got a degree in college (graphic design)...but I get paid to draw so I can't complain :)

Looking forward to BeeHaw!
