Seriously. Vanced wasn't even open-sourced, Revanced is and also has tweaks for many other popular apps.
The problem I face currently is that you get some black liading screens from time to time if you use the microG service to login
The issue has to do something google did and now there seem to be auth issues. The authors of microG don't want to fiy it, as the ReVanced isecase is not exactly what they made their service for.

You migh be interested in ReVanced which is essentially a continuation of the old Vanced project.
Revanced is perfect for me. Not as good as vanced but damn close. Any hiccups are totally worth it for how easy it is to use.
Revanced is exactly what OP is looking for. My only problem with revanced is that the patcher doesnt tell you what version of the youtube apk to use until you select something. Then it tells you that you need youtube apk version x.y.z.
The installer includes a lot of stuff you may or may not want as well which is cool cause it means more features, but also means I gotta take a minute to review what features to enable/disable.
can second this, for YT-Music I'm still using good ol Vanced and it still works just fine but for normal YouTube ReVanced is the only thing I need. No ads, SponsorBlock, YouTube Dislike, customizability and many many other patcher options.
Only thing that bugs me sometimes is that some videos stop loading after like 10secs or so but idk if that's a ReVanced issue or a me issue.
Revanced. Just be carefull google is full of fake downolads. The only real site is revanced.app or the github

I like NewPipe, have had a better experience with it than Vanced overall. You can get it from FDroid.
Second this, newpipe is so good.
An alternative browser based approach would be:
Mobile firefox + ublock + a video background play fix addon
Obviously you lose out on privacy unless using incognito mode.
Llibretube works most if the time.
