Are we just stuck with browsers for the time being? I mean it works but fuck I miss Apollo already.

Mlem is being developed but is in a very early stage.

[–] Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world 39 points 2 years ago

You can use MLEM It's still in test flight, but works pretty OK.

Here's the testflight page: https://testflight.apple.com/join/xQfmkJhc

[–] handhookcardoor@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I used Mlem, it’s a test flight app, so it’s early in development, but it works fine enough. Crashes often, but that’s the only major issue I have.

[–] lettruthout@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Sadly Mlem won't load (via Test Flight) on my 1st generation iPhone SE. The error says that Mlem requires iOS 16.

[–] TexMexBazooka@infosec.pub 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Novel idea: update your phone, so that it supports newer apps.

[–] RickAllensLeftArm@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They can’t. iOS16 is not supported on 1st gen iPhone SE.

[–] akaxaka@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

They mean buy a new phone.

[–] lettruthout@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, eventually a replacement will happen but in the mean time I'll continue playing the "frugal game". Instead of buying a new phone whenever the latest version is released, for less money I buy two of the previous version. Even if one needs a new battery I'm still way ahead. It's very reassuring, especially when traveling, to have a cold spare just waiting in case the first one dies.

So far Mlem not working is the only problem I've encountered so it's way to early to consider spending money. The Lemmy web view works just fine.

Occasionally I encounter someone totally into consumerism that can't understand this, but that's OK.

[–] alcyoneous 1 points 2 years ago

It does require iOS 16. There was another thread about a jailbreak user who was still on iOS 15 and it was confirmed that 16 is the minimum target.

in beta at the moment. personally I'm just sticking with the web ui

[–] borari@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I'm just going to add that the web ui on mobile is great. Good enough that I've stopped using mlem. Mlem doesn't show you the different instances that users and communities are coming from which doesn't really matter for users but is super annoying for communities, and the main dev said that's intentional. It also shows you your "karma", through what I'm assuming is just adding up the raw up/downvotes your posts/comments have accrued. Seeing that is what ultimately made me bounce, it seems like the complete antithesis of what Lemmy is trying to be about.

Also, while they're working on adding a NSFW blur, it doesn't exist yet and fuck seeing all that loli ai porn on my feed. I don't mind having to scroll past stuff I'm not interested in, but come on at least blur it.

Finally the web ui has the rainbow indent lines, while there's nothing but whitespace to indicate child comments on mlem. I'm sure they'll fix most of the stuff up given time, but I'm not using it until they dump the cumulative karma tracking.

I had attempted to begin contributing code and those things left a sour taste in my mouth too. Ultimately I think wait until another open source option comes along and see if I can help at all.

[–] Spitfire@pawb.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It looks like someone else is creating a client, memmy. https://github.com/gkasdorf/memmy

No releases as of yet though so can’t comment on that.

[–] HrBingR 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

According to the GitHub page it’s heavily inspired by Apollo, so that’s got me quite excited.

Mlem kept crashing for me this morning so Ive stuck with the web ui for now as well. I personally like the web ui more but hope mlem gets better soon. (stability and ui wise)

[–] z2k_@lemmy.nz 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Other than Mlem, there are others currently under development too. I’m excitedly following memmy by @gkd@lemmy.ml

[–] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Interesting. I wish there was a “Remind me” feature so I could come back to your comment later to check on progress of that app. I’m using Mlem right now.

[–] adj16@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If you have a github account, you can "watch" the repo. If not...well...I'll try to remember to post back here when I get those notifications :)

[–] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

No GitHub account but I found the button to save a post/comment. Thx!

[–] ddnomad@infosec.pub 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I mean, you can probably use whatever reminders app you have on the computing device variety you prefer :)

[–] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I meant more like the reddit feature but I found the button for saving a post/comment so I can come back to it later.

[–] ddnomad@infosec.pub 1 points 2 years ago

You can also star the repo on GitHub and enable release notifications, I assume the developer will create a release once the app becomes usable.

[–] sla@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

the dev seems to be posting updates here if you want to subscribe to it https://lemmy.ml/c/memmy

[–] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago

Got the TestFlight beta! Thx! Looks promising.

[–] jmf@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago

you have to download the testflight testing suite, but mlem works well for me! https://github.com/buresdv/Mlem

[–] dan@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago

I’m using the website still. I got Mlem going and it works, but I’m not a huge fan of the main feed being fully expanded. I assume it’ll get better as it gets worked on so I’ll keep an eye on it. But until then the website actually works pretty smoothly.

[–] digitalarcana 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You could beta test Mlem through TestFlight. It is a Lemmy app for iOS that works reasonably well for being brand new.

https://testflight.apple.com/join/xQfmkJhc

[–] Jonny_meme_replacement@fedia.io 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Could this work for fedia?
Sorry if this question is annoying I’m just new

[–] digitalarcana 1 points 2 years ago

Mlem only works with Lemmy instances. Fedia is a kbin instance. They’re similar, and federate together for messages, but it is different code, so different apps are needed. I don’t think there is a kbin app yet.

[–] Pexily@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’m working on building my own app for it too in Flutter, but Mlem seems to be the only option available as of now

[–] problematicconsumer@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Interesting, are you planning on an open source/free app?

[–] joeygibson@lemmy.one 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’m using Mlem, but I keep trying to do the Apollo gestures I’m so used to, and getting frustrated.

[–] the_nightman 1 points 2 years ago

I’m in the same boat. I’m also an iOS developer so I’ve got something in the works (:

[–] gravity@infosec.pub 3 points 2 years ago

Thanks. Just tried Mlem. Seems reasonable. Dislike having to TestFlight it though.

[–] stevo 2 points 2 years ago

on ios install TestFlite, go here. https://join-lemmy.org/apps/

[–] Retirix_YT@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

I’m using Mlem through TestFlight. Works pretty well, crashes sometimes but I’m not sure that’s not just because I’m on IOS 17 dev beta.

[–] eldereko@feddit.dnico.io 1 points 2 years ago

I've tried Memmy and Mlem, both are decent but in their early stages. I've been using Vger (formerly wefwef) mostly and really like it

[–] verkraftet@feddit.de 1 points 2 years ago

Mlem looks great so far.
