Sync is also going down. I hope that the blackout will have some impact on the execs, but I'm not expecting anything real to come.

[–] naaarf@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even if reddit reverses any of their pricing plans following the blackout, I think that's it for at least some of the apps that already announced their shutting down. You just can't run a business (or even volunteer lots of your personal time) if reddit has already shown, that you and your product mean nothing to them and they are willing to alienate their most passionate users with a mere 30 days lead time.

Yeah and NSFW content will be gone anway. A major deal breaker for many, not only necessarily for porn but for other random NSFW stuff which pop up in most subreddits. Paying more for less is a no go for most people, understandably.

Aww man, Sync Pro was my Reddit :(

[–] noodlejetski 4 points 1 year ago

one of the best Android apps out there, UI-wise.

RIP RiF. Good app.
That's why I'm here. I like this place so far though!

[–] whitehatbofh 11 points 1 year ago

Same. RIF is / was my app. It's a shame in some ways, but this place is better in many other ways. I'm happy here and look forward to seeing the Fediverse grow!

Fuck reddit, VCs, and greedy assholes.

[–] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

If you added up the cumulative amount of my life I've spent using any one piece of software, RiF would win

[–] emeraldheart 4 points 1 year ago

It'll be an adjustment to this new site, but I welcome the change. It seems healthier here.

RIF was the only way i accessed reddit. That means i'm out for good. I'll miss subreddits like 'DataIsBeautiful' or 'RetroFuturism' and i'm still not 100% fluent in Lemmy but... there's literally no way back now.

[–] erikjuh@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure that with the growth of lemmy, new and interesting communities will pop up all over the place. We just need to give it some time.

[–] imperator@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Same. Bit bummed out. But I can't see Lemmy taking the reigns unfortunately. It took me 5+ instances to find a place where I could finally sign up.

Holy cow this is sad. I havent used RIF in probably a literal decade, but it was the first reddit app for android and I remember using it on my G1/htc dream back in the day. RIF predates a lot of the current era of the modern web and it existed even before the digsplosion. It's a relic of a different age and it's been growing and evolving this whole time.

undefined> G1/htc dream

Just had a tiny wave of nostalgia reading those names. It was a different time indeed.

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yup. Saw that one coming. June 30th is officially my last day of Reddit.

[–] erikjuh@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

Indeed. It was fun while it lasted.

[–] div@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah I think so for me too, Lemmy is going to be my go to from then on.

[–] Rats 11 points 1 year ago

Man this is sad news. RIF had such a clean and usable interface compared to any modern social media front-end. But, the news got me here though, so that's kind of nice!

[–] buxtonwater@lemmy.one 10 points 1 year ago

I have loved and adored RIF since I bought golden platinum for it years ago, the 30th will be a depressing day.

[–] Csynthare@lemmy.fmhy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

That was the death knell for me. Just had my five year for my latest username. Done now.

[–] Valon_Blue@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just waiting for Boost to join this crowd too. It was a good run, but those fees will kill all the third party clients eventually.

[–] overlordror 4 points 1 year ago

Boost was my client of choice for reddit, too. I doubt it will be able to survive despite being on the smaller side, the developer has been quite busy with his life. The change away from third-party apps is honestly the last straw for me with reddit; I can't stand the new design and exclusively used the old.reddit design on browser. Happy to have a home that feels like the early days of reddit on desktop. I hope more people arrive at the same conclusion.

[–] KeefChief12 5 points 1 year ago

Its a strange time.

[–] phillycodehound@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I wrote the dev of Joey another good Android Reddit app to see if he'd do a ActivityPub version

[–] StarkillerX42@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Slide will also shut down. Not because its devs want to, but because there aren't any devs left. My favorite Reddit app, doomed, even if Reddit chose a more reasonable price for their API.
