Denmark's postal service to stop delivering letters (www.bbc.com)

Denmark's state-run postal service, PostNord, is to end all letter deliveries at the end of 2025, citing a 90% decline in letter volumes since the start of the century.

The decision brings to an end 400 years of the company's letter service. Denmark's 1,500 post boxes will start to disappear from the start of June.

Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen sought to reassure Danes, saying letters would still be sent and received as "there is a free market for both letters and parcels".

Denmark ranks as one of the world's most digitalised countries.

There's an app for almost everything: few people use cash, and Danes even carry drivers' licences and health cards on their smartphones.

Bank statements, bills, and correspondence from local authorities are all sent electronically.

Public services send communications via a Digital Post app or other platforms and PostNord Denmark says the letter market is no longer profitable.

Letter numbers have fallen since the start of the century from 1.4 billion to 110 million last year.

More accurately, Denmark's postal service stops delivering post.

This is a direct consequence of the free market act from 2023 that no longer obligated PostNord to deliver post and stopped paying for the service. It is no surprise that post delivery isn't a profit market, especially in this day and age, so IMO that was a pretty stupid idea from our politicians. Now only Dao delivers post but there's nothing stopping them from saying "this island is too expensive to deliver pos to. Come pick up your shit in the mainland's ferry terminal." And trust me, we have a lot of islands for such a small country.

it should be highlighted that PostNord was no longer obligated to deliver post because they failed to do so in the first place.

The one saving grace with all of this is the list of "horror examples" from why privatization doesn't work. PostNord isn't the only privatized entity and the others have also failed to live up to the socialist high quality standard that free market capitalism tried to replace - but it sure has the most really ass backwards shit examples of how fucking stupid privatization is.

I've not had a physical address since 2023. I use a friend's, but it's 99% bullshit, so he doesn't even bother to bring it by anymore. He brought a tax form to lunch last week so I can file (which I may or may not do), but otherwise, everything's getting round-filed. Sucks to make him be the one to handle that, but I can't get mail in my van.

On one hand, this seems rough. Being able to send and receive mail seems just a little important.

On the other hand, I have wished in the past that I didn't have a mailbox. 99% of my mail is spam, and probably ~5% isn't even addressed to me. Everything else could have been an email.
