For median income which is about $80K in US, one would need at least $2M in investments to retire at 65 without SS and other income. You would also have to carry private disability insurance if you could get it until you retired.
Edit: And you would probably have to carry a lot of life insurance too if you could get it. Plus a lot more public assistance and law enforcement would probably be required because who could afford all this going it alone.
Man... that's depressing
People under estimate the value of SS retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. Add to that medicare. It also makes them a big target.
