Many of these have the same underlying external cause of money no longer being free so they can't keep the merry-go-round going for their debt and/or their investors are no longer content to just pour more money into the engine.

You may have this the wrong way round - you've got a solution in search of a problem. 'I want to use this computer what is it good at?' If you had a use-case for it, wouldn't you be using it already? What keeps you using your Mac mini instead for general purpose computing stuff?

What do you like doing on computers? That way folks responding can tailor their suggestions. If I told you the 400 exposes the GPIO pins and you can pick up a breadboard adapter for it and interact with physical components via python, would that sound interesting to you or mean anything to you? Have you searched the internet for "raspberry pi projects" and seen anything that seems interesting to you? Do you just need help whittling options down?

I have a handful of pis, none in the 400 case though. One runs pi-hole as an ad/tracker blocker for my network, one is in a little case with a 7" screen and I use it for emulation, one is a general purpose computer, one is hooked up to my a/v receiver as an mpd player (though it's been a while since I've used that).

Amazing! Welcome to the world (or worlds?)! There are so many different types of games that fit under this umbrella that it can be a little overwhelming.

The games I mentioned in my above comment offer a pretty good cross-section of different types of games built for solo. But there are some I didn't touch on. And there are also plenty of different types of multiplayer games with lots of different themes and mechanics - it's not just D&D anymore.

If you want any more specific recommendations or tips as you explore and get started - or if you just want to share about some of the games you've been playing - definitely start a new post about it in this community. I love chatting about these games!

I love Mapo Tofu. So few places around here have it on their menu (or if they do, they go real light in the peppercorns). So I picked up some Sichuan peppercorns myself and learned to make it.

This is a great reminder to add it to the dinner calendar for some time this month.

Right, but "just use cameras" is what I mean by "niche peripherals."

Other than the Wii, no modern consoles have had an installed user base for Move/Kinect/Camera type stuff to make it worth it for many developers to get involved. And even the Wii was just mostly shovelware waggle games, though as I mentioned there were some Wii Zapper games that approximated lightguns.

I think at this point we're past the sorts of external cameras and tracking necessary for lightgun things even more than we already were. This sort of stuff has already moved to VR and I don't know that we're gonna get them back in the physical realm any time soon.

I've been on Masto since 2017. Ran my own instance for a while, but have since joined another instance.

I've been on Lemmy since they were first testing federation, but there wasn't enough activity (aside from lemmygrad bs) to keep me around until more recently.

I have a bookwyrm account that I keep forgetting to update.

I've run a funkwhale instance for a few years, but I don't actively federate with any other instances.

Lightguns don't work on LCD screens, so they were not feasible on most consoles once folks started swapping out their CRTs.

Wii had a handful of light gun like games (that used the sensor bar of course) with the Wii Zapper, but other than that games of this type have needed more niche peripherals (Kinect, PS camera, now VR) that have made them more niche.

You say you're open to anything, but can you clarify if you prefer board/card games or TTRPGs?

There are a ton of free solo TTRPGs all along the spectrum to simple journaling games to full on RPG experiences. Alone Among The Stars, Thousand Year Old Vampire, Starforged, Colostle, and tons more. If you're into that idea, check a few out - there are lots available pay-what-you-want on itch.

As far as boardgames, I love Nemo's War 2nd Edition as a solo game. Many of the Tiny Epic games have solo modes that are pretty fun. Someone else mentioned Friday which is good fun, too.

it's almost as much of a scam to just blanket say all crypto is trash because of scams...

How do you figure? Has anyone ever been rug-pulled by not investing in a shitty crypto mobile game? Has anyone ever lost money not buying a link to a jpg of an AI-generated drawing of a horse?

I don't think saying cryptocurrency is almost always scam is a scam in and if itself - at worst it might be an active component of another scam if I'm getting you involved in mn my multi-level marketing company or something.

Cryptobros aren't the only problem with cryptocurrency or blockchain. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me a useful and viable use case for blockchain that isn't needlessly wasteful vs a more naive form of decentralization or better served by a centralized function.

I know some folks are using blockchain for supply chain tracking, and that seems pretty cool and like a good use for it. But I'm not deep into that world so I'm not informed enough to know if that is the best solution vs something like a more naive PKI system if they need to verify things.

did you know a release of a new fully open source LLM called OpenLLaMA just got announced by the Researchers at Berkeley AI Research?

I didn't know that. Have you created a post about it in this community? I don't see one.
