https://lemmy.world/c/newcommunities Is probably a good start to advertise it initially.

Also be prepared to work on the community for a long time. Think of it like tending to a garden. Lemmy is still pretty new as a platform but it is obviously growing. Some niche topics are less popular and will take even more time to grow compared to other topics. If you're willing to continue posting and keep the community productive eventually more people are going to join.

What prompted this change in recent years?

Can't wait for the juicy posts

I think you hit the nail on the head there. In fact one of the biggest sources of economic value for networks like Lemmy and Reddit is the free labor people are willing to do out of passion for the community.

Modding on either Reddit or Lemmy seems like a lot of work. It's like a part time job where you don't get paid. What do the mods get out of their labor?

“I am sorry to say this, but please be mindful of wearing Reddit gear in public,” CEO Steve Huffman says in an internal memo. “Some folks are really upset, and we don’t want you to be the object of their frustrations.”

'Lemmy, what a great baby name. It's short for Lemming, which means "independent free thinker" but only on opposite day. What do you think, darling?'

Here's the good news: if you get to the company and it turns out you hate being there, you can always quit and go home. I'm not encouraging you to do this but it's true nonetheless. Besides, internships typically have expiration dates so you are going to have to decide what to do afterwards anyway.

When I graduated, I got into the trap of thinking that my job would be the rest of my life. The truth is that you will probably have a ton of jobs and there are constantly opportunities to change your path in life.

Wrong answers only. The stranger the better!

There is a mod log on Lemmy so you can see why people get banned.

I've always been conservative about what kind of services I host because it takes time to get them set up. For example, there's no reason for me to set up music streaming when I only ever listen to music on my phone and all my music files are already on my phone. On the other hand, it's a good learning opportunity to set stuff up and have to fix it when it breaks. What do you think?

I don't mean to be pessimistic, bit since most subreddits are only going dark for a couple days, the site will basically be back to normal soon. I wonder how many users here are only here because of temporary outrage and not because they actually prefer Lemmy. I'm curious about people's outlook on this situation.

I started playing Minecraft in 2012, on version 1.3. That was ten years ago now but still a lot further along than the Beta versions. Today I play mostly 1.14, which is way newer but still about 4 years old. What do you think should be the cutoff between the different "eras" of MC?

I was struggling to wrap my head around how federated social media works until I realized that email has basically been doing the same thing for 30 years. Different email servers are like instances of a federated network. You can send emails to people from within a single server or you can send emails to people on any other mail server. Your email address is a username followed by an '@' and the server address, just like on Lemmy. Email is a decentralized service I've been using the whole time!
