Yeah, please let's keep the cryptoshit on reddit. We need c/buttcoin, where are you, u/AmericanScream?

I already had to block a "free speech" absolutist who said I'm forcing him to be a Nazi, so sadly they are already here.

I think a lot of confusion about the fediverse stems from the fact that most services default to your local instance as front page. I know you can change it in the settings here, but the setting is also defaulted to local, so maybe that one should be set to all, too?

Yeah, no hate, the app is really nice but I don't like the icon at all. If more people want it to change, maybe a contest would be nice.

There are examples where this was tried. It doesn't work. People who disagree with Nazis leave the platforms, so the result is the same.

I'm sorry but no. I don't have to listen to Nazis. If they are allowed here, it will drive me and a lot of other people away. We had more than enough "free speech" experiments now. It always ended in these platforms being an insufferable cesspool of Nazis, conspiracy theorists, incels etc. and all sane people were driven away. It doesn't work. These people need to be deplatformed, that is the only way.

My specific problem is that the lemmy part of the fediverse is blocked by my workplace firewall, so I'm kind of forced to use the app atm.

I opened the communities over at kbin though, so they will be accessible from here anyways.

Too late :)

I created two subs over at kbin. I hope they'll be part of the fediverse again soon.

May I ask why signing up took hours? I didn't even need to confirm anything via email, so I took me like 10 seconds.

I used sh.itjust.works though, I think it's meant to, well, just work. Maybe the process on other instances is more complicated?

Are you asking me? I'm not sure because the buttons to answer a thread or a post look the same in the jerboa app and I nearly made the mistake to answer a post instead of a thread already.

As far as I understand it works like this: you don't need to set up a whole server. You can add a community on whatever server you like. You will automatically be a mod then. I'm not sure if it's wise to search for random co-mods right now though, because the whole community will get a boost now and there will be tons of people where you can't estimate their reputation, so it might be vulnerable to bad actors atm.

I'm starting mycology subs (mags?) Right now over at kbin and I think I'll look for co-mods in a few weeks, after the dust of the migration settles.

Just do it. Commitment will make the whole thing thrive!

Is creating new communities possible right now? Or will it be? There is a feature request on github from January last year without any comments, so I wondered if it is even desired.

[–] gonzo0815@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Did that right now :)

It seems the Sophos firewall at work blocks all access to lemmy instances.

Join-lemmy.org and lemmy.ml are blocked completely. I can see the front page on sh.itjust.works and lemmy.world, but clicking on a post results in an infinite loading circle. When I try to log in on either site I also get a loading circle on the login button.

Any ideas if I can circumvent the firewall?

Hello,

I'm a reddit refugee and used to rif. I particularly liked it because the design made it possible to read a lot of text without scrolling too much. I'd like to have the same experience here, but the two things I mentioned in the title impede that.

  1. I can change the font size, but the size of the thread titles in the feed is smaller than the font size of the comments, so I can choose between titles being too small or comment texts being too big. It would be really nice to adjust them separately.

  2. I feel there is a lot of empty space before and after texts, UI symbols etc. I really liked the "density" of rif. I get that a lot of people prefer the opposite, but maybe it's possible to also make that individually adjustable?

Oh and I'm using the android app.

Btw, off topic, but I'm kind of getting exited about all of this. I felt that reddit was one of the last spaces that wasn't completely messed up by corporate interest and I hope the whole fediverse thing will be a sustainable replacement. Keep up the good work!
