Ok but nowadays there are alternatives to systemd (OpenRC, runit). Not necessarily better, just alternatives. No SysV init involved.

I also want to avoid being too dependent on Google's service and then get locked behind a paywall or something. One never knows.

I think XFCE devs started working on the Wayland port. See https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayland_roadmap.

It's up to you and to your needs. Do you like configuring your software to your preference? If so, you'll enjoy fiddling with configurable text editors. Do you have time for that? Or can you do that well enough so that you benefit from it? You have to answer those questions, as it depends on your constraints.
