Tbh nothing guarantees that the same doesn't happen in Lemmy. As long as you have some form of centralization that might always happen, even if the owner says it won't. There's truly decentralized options and everyone should be jumping to that, not another version of the same issue like Lemmy or Mastodon.

I think owning our accounts would be actually good and saving a key pair is as simple as saving a password. Also, the server wouldn't be going down because there would be no servers.
