Given that the purpose of the EU was to dramatically reduce the conflicts that plagued Europe for thousands of years, culminating in WWII, through ever greater cooperation, the credibility of the project may come into question if Europe is unable to cooperate enough to see off Russian aggression in neighbouring terrain.
Relative to many of the issues which the EU & closely aligned neighbours must agree upon if they are to act, responses to a military threat ought to be easier to arrive at, and yet here we are.
They're likely going along with it on the basis that they no longer care about downballot races, or even the main race, intending instead for Trump to seize power & install loyalists by force.
I don't see their plan working, but there'll still be considerable chaos & violence during the attempt.

If someone were prosecuted for pirating research papers which they, as someone who pays tax in a country which funded that research, have any likelihood of success in using that point as a defence? Or if they made the paper available to residents of that country?
Am sure corporate interests & standard neoliberalism would move swiftly to stifle any such angle of attack, but still.
Whatever about anywhere else, within the US, the foundational concept of no taxation without representation could apply here without much stretch.

Maybe, when nobody is trying to have a discussion, and everyone is feeling fairly neutral & not preoccupied, you could let your sibling know that the sounds which might be acknowledgement can be misinterpreted as frustration. Acknowledge that you appreciate they might not be frustration, but that you'd like some clues to tell when they are actually frustrated or disinterested in engaging, so the Elders can develop a more useful sense of how to continue. Continuing might involve insistence or boundaries, but could equally involve leaving your sibling be or finding some other approach.
As an aside, you sound very loving & I really admire your determination to find a way to help your family communicate more effectively & with less aggravation. You make your family sound very cool.
