Why not surface communities based on activity. As in how active the comments section is. That way agreements and disagreements are weighed equally.

This can also go the same way for upvotes. If you have to put some thought into a disagreement you should do the same for agreement. So upvotes should be removed too so the platform just operates on voiced agreement or disagreement in the comments.

p2p makes sense in this situation. It can end up being a massive battery drainer if we are talking smartphone implementation. (coming from torrenting reference point and how it eats battery on phones)

I can already imagine a few ways that can go wrong. This would be a awesome way to do it though but there are many issues that would have to be addressed for that.

The good thing is you can always run a tiny instance for just yourself and not defederate with anyone if other communities defederate too aggressively.

Pulling a YouTube over here I guess.

defederation should be kept to a minimum and saved for big offenders only. I think best option is for lemmy to have an option to hide posts from some instances on a per user basis.

Reporting isn't good. I do think users should have an ability to block instances for themselves. (you can do that right now if you run your own instance)

that's a common issue. Might be overloaded with the influx of people but it posts anyway if you refresh. Reference

It's more open and not locked down to proprietary software.
