The computer I am running it on has a dual core Athlon 64x2 and no integrated graphics, so I do need a GPU. I ended up going with a 1050ti because I intend to allow some friends on it meaning 4-5 concurrent streams is a possibility and I found one for really cheap on Ebay because the fan was broken. Thank you for the recommendation though, I should have provided more information when I posted this.

Does anyone have any advice on hosting a server to the outside world? I intend to host a Jellyfin media server and want to be able to access it remotely. I was leaning towards hosting a VPN on my network with a good password but I don't know much about that. I am looking for a free option that ideally doesn't require proprietary software and can be completely hosted locally. For reasons that I won't go into, I am a little concerned about my isp seeing the traffic to the media server. I know I am being paranoid but I don't really care. I imagine if I host it through port forwarding on the router but set up HTTPS that would encrypt the traffic and stop my ISP from seeing it, but I don't know if hosting a VPN would be easier / more secure. Thoughts?

Well, I'm not running it currently for reasons, but I used to host a Jellyfin media server on my desktop, but that was inconvenient as it was the desktop I was actually using. Eventually I switched from Pop!_OS to Fedora which lacked Jellyfin transcoding support and I had to stop hosting it. In a few days I should get a 1050ti to complete the setup and then I will be back up and running on my first dedicated server. I will probably look in to hosting a mail server, a nas, bitwarden, and possibly a librex or searx search engine on it once it is up and running. It is an old system with 3gb of ddr2 and an athelon 64 x2 from 2005 but it should do the trick for everything I want out of it. Right now I am just hoping that the new GPU doesn't trigger current protection on the cheapo PSU that is in there.

Edit: I'm also going to set up an i2p seedbox for obscure torrents.

I2p is an option that is completely free, though it is somewhat limited. It is similar to tor but supports torrenting over the actual i2p network but it doesn't support clear web torrents and is quite slow.

You can make requests on the wishlist section of postman.

Hi, I am looking to make my first dedicated jellyfin server rather than running it on my desktop, but don't know what gpu to get. I will have only a few users and want to avoid Nvidia because I will be on linux + foss drivers. Any recommendations?

If I remember correctly Matrix does support having a bridge to Discord so you can receive discord messages on Matrix, but I haven't tried it. You can probably find more on their website.

If you are tech savvy and the stuff you want to torrent is somewhat mainstream, I would recommend torrenting over i2p. You should be able to find all the info you need to get started on their website: https://geti2p.net/

i2p is an anonymity network similar to tor, but the implementation allows for torrenting much better than tor. It is worth noting that i2p is not a drop-in replacement for a vpn and you will only be able to access content on the i2p network, however you can easily request that things be added and there will usually be a seeder in a day or two.

Could someone please explain?
