This is the part of Lemmy that is slightly more complicated than Reddit. I have the impression that the only way to create a community is to own an instance to set it up on (I may be wrong, please correct me if that's the case). This will limit the number of unique and fun communities in the long run as owning and running an instance has proved itself to be a somewhat daunting task it seems.

You're partially right but it's based on which server/instance you're on. For example, Beehaw does restrict community creation to admins and I know that Lemmy One does as well but other servers/instances may not.

I don’t play much Pokémon anymore, but r/pokemontrades was the reason I was able to finish a living dex for gens 7 and 8, so I would love to see that community flourish here too. It’d be a great resource, especially when Lemmy eventually gets big enough to have a sizable Pokémon community.
I really hope it'll happen at some point.
