swap AP and Jacob&Co

[–] Basic-District-1950@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

grand seiko is called grand seiko because it costs over a grand for a seiko

[–] smokelaw@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately non grand seikos can also cost that

I wonder how you separated Zenith from JLC, IWC, and GO. To me they're similar tiers of watchmakers that all bring some interesting things to the table, at a relatively similar price tier. They probably compare fairly closely to Omega's offerings too.

Where is Armitron? They're the little still American watch brand that often can.

I know actual upper-middle class professional people. Know what they wear? Stuff like low-end Timex and low-end Citizen. They'd find a low-end Tissot extravagant, and have no idea what is more expensive than a Rolex.

[–] Sinn556i@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

sinn should be in the just buy category.

[–] masala-papad-mafia@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You forgot to add Fossil in the ‘Why’ section 🙃

Pandemic bubble—overall good to echo some of my purchases and some made me think more. How I bought and what I bought back in these years past has changed. The spell has receded in the rear view mirror and cash is dear again. The endorphin hit can be examined — travel and living costs are soberly compared to buying another watch. Won’t buy a Rolex now any more than I could get a Calatrava grail. It may not be about the price but that fiscal sanity is solidly back to make it a sharp sting.

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Fiscal responsibility can't be overstated in current economic environment!

[–] freethebox@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I almost completely agree, great list.

but your AP and RM placement choice is baffling. Those two definitely need to be swap

Also, gotta be honest, Invicta pro diver is one of the best watches you can get for the money. A classic diver silhouette with a tank nh35 movement for under $100? Can’t beat it.

[–] omodhia@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Seems to be a bit of snobbery around Invicta. Seem to be much bigger in the US than elsewhere and their playing around with discounts gets them a bad wrap, but otherwise it seems to attack undue attention. I wonder why.

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Thank you for the kind words!

Probably my own bias, I see very little appeal with AP as it feels like they make the same watch over and over again.

Invicta was mostly a joke to be honest, haha, sorry!

[–] Jonjoloe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think you’re overstating the pricing for JLC. They’re significantly better watches/movements than what you have in the second grouping.

The price increases make them expensive at retail, but this is because they were “great deals” prior. Now they’re more appropriately priced which may be a turn off. However, they’re heavily discounted on the gray market bringing them within Omega’s pricing.

[–] PastaAndWine09@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What’s the current discount on Breitlings?

[–] TechnEconomics@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Panerai… crazy. Overpriced junk

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't care for them either, especially for the cost! Though, my buddy has a Radiomir GMT Alarm from the early 2000s and it's very cool!

[–] LucasUnited@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tell me you have never owned a nice watch, without telling me you have never owned one

[–] Electrical_Swing8166@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hublot’s official slogan might as well be “for the Saudi prince with more money than taste.”

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and in this case, they're not included in my upper-middle class professional demographic haha

What are 'whelming watches'?

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

haha watches that give you value but also cost what you'd expect them to. They aren't a great value proposition but also aren't offensively expensive.

[–] metsurf@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Add Mido on bang for buck line

[–] _echnaton@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lmao are you delusional? Your list is pure dog💩

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm always interested at the kind of person who feels the need to engage in something online that they completely disagree or think is terrible, and then the need to do it rudely. Are you this way in real life, too? I'm genuinely curious.

What about Tommy Hilfiger?

[–] Erilaz_Of_Heruli@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Omega and rolex are the same brand

[–] MrDagon007@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Groupthink is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that graph

I don't know what's more bizarre, this weird tier list watch recommendation thing for charitably minded individuals or the fact that people are genuinely responding to this post.

[–] Morakel22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Finally a list that I can agree with. Well done. Only thing I would change is AP but I guess that’s personal preference.

[–] iggy34@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

- bang for buck

- seiko

not really. maybe 10 years ago but not today.

[–] kosnosferatu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Fair. I just assumed that if I put Seiko lower a lynch mob from r/watches would come to my house

[–] odinMithrandir@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What’s a “Whelming” watch?
