Also, are malware-free cursor applications still a thing? Or does it make me an old man to want to do it in 2023?

Who uses a mouse? I function all applications with just a keyboard, my custom arch based distribution doesn’t even support mice because I removed all drivers from the kernel. /s

You use a keyboard? Cringe. I just pull up a virtual keyboard on screen and click every button that I need to type.

It's 2023, gramps.

Ahhh, the steam deck experience, I relate.

Do you use a keyboard? All the cool kids use punch cards

Change the OS cursor, i don't know about mac but you can do that on windows and linux

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think I might actually do this

[–] yukichigai@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

On windows it's Settings > Themes, then click the "Mouse pointers" item. That should bring up the Pointers tab of the Mouse Properties window. Then it's just a matter of getting .ani or .cur versions of the pointers you want.

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah you could save a picture of whatever you want in the right size and format for a custom pointer. Idk what those are off the top of my head though.

I’ve been using MouseCape on macOS for years and it’s worked flawlessly

Whoa, I didn't know deviant art also had useful stuff like this on it. Thanks!

i'm not very sure about Windows aside from DeviantArt, RealWorld and similar galleries, but for KDE you can get a catalogue built into the cursor settings

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

No problems in Windows, you can download and use a ton of cursors from Deviantart and a lot of other sitees, there are even some Cursor Manager, with which you can change the cursor set with one clic, also some editors to make your own sets. The cursor image format is the same for Linux and Windows.

[–] MonkderZweite@feddit.ch 10 points 1 year ago

Depends on the platform i guess? Windows cursors vs. Linux cursors.

It's next when you click and the printer finger moves. Serotonin please

[–] tubaruco@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

theres malware on cursor applications? isnt it possible to just change the cursor with the .cur files if youre on windows?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'd always heard it was one of those common ways that people get malware on their PCs. That and toolbars.

[–] Crozekiel@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I don't know how common it is anymore, but it definitely was a few years back. You knew a computer was infected with everything when you saw a stupid cartoon dinosaur or something as the mouse cursor as soon as the pc booted to windows... I think it was more about what was bundled in the download from scummy websites doing the damage though, not the actual cursor files. I still cringe though if I see a non-standard cursor in windows, like PTSD-esque flashbacks...

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah especially when cursors come as a .cur file but the download is an EXE that 'installs the cursor' for you

This is what's kept me away for so long. But I think I'm ready to glam up my PC again.

Listen is I want Banzai Buddy to mess with nuclear launch codes on my government laptop then that's his right.

[–] Hematite@rqd2.net 7 points 1 year ago

You know a game is good when it does this.

Did some checking, seems not the same, but not sure if it’s because it’s HD.

[–] CrabLord 3 points 1 year ago

I was so happy when I found out RuneLite has this as a plug-in
