Hello friends, this is my first post here so apologies if I missed a similar post to this. I recently made my account on this instance and have been enjoying Beehaw since. However I do want to explore other instances at some point so I tried logging into some other ones. I read the FAQ and it seems that I should be able to log in with my same user/pass to any other federated instances, no? But when I do I just get stuck on an endless loop and it never seems to let me log in. I've tried this on instances such as https://lemmy.ml/login and https://lemmy.one/login, but no dice.

Am I doing something wrong? Any advice is appreciated.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. If there are communities in other instances you want to join, you can copy their URL and paste it into Beehaw's search. From there, you can subscribe to them. You can also set the filter from the front page to all to see posts from other instances.

Basically, you need to access those other communities via Beehaw's instance (or wherever you have an account).

I hope that helps!

Perfect explanation! Thank you so much! That makes much more sense now.

I might also be wrong, but I think the account is instance specific. You'll always have to log in via Beehaw but your account will work on any, e.g. if you browse by all you can see and comment on a lemmy.ml post and even subscribe to the community. However you cannot use your account to log in to Lemmy.ml.

Hmm, it might be instance-specific. I just tried to upvote/comment on lemmy.ml but it sent me back to the login page. Thanks for the assistance though!

Your account is specific to the instance you signed up to but you can post and comment on other instances, thats the way the federation works. for example im on sopuli.xyz and i gotta go on https://sopuli.xyz/c/support@beehaw.org to be able to use my account on this community.

To make it easier i just subscribe to the communities i like and then i can select them from my main page
