Usually I just upload stuff to social media without thinking about it twice. Here, though, devs require user donations to keep the servers running.

So im wondering, if I intend to post a videogame clip, is it recommended to upload it elsewhere and then link it here? Or am i overthinking this and I should just upload my clutches?

Edit: Looking at Lemmy's Documentation, Not only they recommend Peertube, but also PixelFed for uploading larger images and videos.

where possible, it'd be courteous to host things off the site yeah (we're not picky about where you do this, as a general rule). we don't have our picture storage completely sorted out yet (working on it!) and we believe it's the last hurdle causing some of the errors people are running into at this point. hopefully we can get to a point pretty quickly though where none of what i'm describing matters though

Someone suggested using peertube for videos since it "crossposts?" because of ActivityPub but I didn't look into how that works too much.

I haven't looked into it a great deal either, but my impression is using peertube would just be exchanging using one donation-based server for another.

BUT then I did look more into it and that's fairly wrong, peertube uses p2p torrents to reduce server load. @aka_oscar@beehaw.org should check out https://joinpeertube.org/instances?profile=video-maker&themes=7&nsfw=blur&quota=5000000000&isStreamer=no and give that a shot

Oooh I like the P2P stuff, if everyone is a server then no one needs to be a server!

That sound really nice. I, too, was worrying if it was gonna be a matter of "which instance should we fuck with all this videos to oblivion". Peertube seems like the ideal option as of right now.

I am wondering if its possible to embed the videos into lemmy (idk if i said it right. I mean i dont want to always go to another website to watch a video like in this case. Makes sense for 10 min videos but not for 15 sec clips). But dw about it, youve helped greatly.

Small images being uploaded here are fine. The more you can upload large things elsewhere the cheaper it'll be to run this service, so we'd greatly appreciate it!

This is a great line of thought and exactly the type of mentality that will help a place like Beehive thrive!

I just want to say thank you for being a steward for your community.
