the big stickied thread is getting cluttered with lots of new people and the "how was your week" thread isn't a great fit for introductions, so it seems about time to make this a dedicated thread of its own so peoples' posts aren't getting lost.

tell us a little bit about yourself, folks. don't gotta be too specific or revealing, just whatever you want to put out there. this'll be a good way of getting to know all the people you're now on here with

Howdy from Austin, TX! Excited to be here. I have a love for strange sounds, and stranger places (virtual or not). Current projects include: trying to teach myself how to sketch in 10 minutes a day, writing my dissertation, learning Spanish, and playing go (I'm terrible).

Hello all!

I'm Hazelnoot (she/they), a Software Developer from the USA. My main interests are Programming, Gaming (PC and TTRPGs), Anime, and Retrocomputing. I'm also proudly transgender and would love to connect with other LGBTQ+ people here!

I've got the usual story - decade Reddit user being driven out by API restrictions. In fact, this is actually my second time being pushed off a mainstream platform and onto the Fediverse. I previously left Twitter for Mastodon after Elon Musk took over and all moderation disappeared. I've been very interested in Lemmy as a replacement for Reddit, and I'm excited to be here on Beehaw!

My introduction to online communities was through listservs and Usenet in the early days of the eternal September (1993-1994). I begrudgingly joined various corporate social media platforms to keep up with friends and family; thought that Reddit (a decade ago anyway) carried some of the spirit of old Usenet but knew a centralised corporate platform would eventually start eating its users. I'm hopeful that the various manifestations of the fediverse will gradually turn the tide of the internet back towards decentralisation.

I dithered over whether to use the slightly anonymous handle that I've used on Reddit and a few other platforms, or a less anonymous one that I've used in more places – ended up choosing the one that I've used on Mastodon accounts among many others.

IRL I alternately call myself a professional filer and a professional queer, as I work for an LGBTIQ+ archive. Politics, literature, and tech seem to be well covered here; I think the communities I'll miss the most from Reddit are the ones devoted to coffee and stationery.

Hey everyone, I'm Juniper. I'm a trans woman living in Vancouver currently. Very shy, but I love games, ttrpgs, mycology, worldbuilding, and photography. I've recently picked up leather working as a new hobby, and I want to start to learning Italian soon. Lovely to join this community!

Hi hawbeeists 😊 (like hobbyists, but Beehaw, get it?)

I came from Reddit. I like plants and animals and occasionally going hiking. I live in Atlantic Canada and am currently displaced by hurricane Fiona (still, after seven months), but the end is in sight and I should be able to go home soon! I have a BSc (major in Env. Sci.) and I like to draw digitally and play with string (crochet, knitting, etc.). I'm providing some 2D art to the upcoming free Steam game Jerma's Big Adventure 2, which has been an absolute blast to work on. I've mainly been playing Sea of Thieves and Diablo III lately. I'm also a lesbian and most likely autistic. She/her.

Edit: je parle français aussi, mais il faut vous dire que mon français est rouillé 😅

First post! Just throwing myself in here. Initially I was interested in this community as a Reddit alternative, but I have to admit I'm pretty impressed with the coherent vision that this site has for how it wants to exist. I've been lurking for a little bit and I think this site provides a totally different type of value than other social media spaces! That's amazing! So I'm excited to contribute what value and content I can and be a part of the ethos.

[–] hybridhavoc@darkfriend.social 6 points 1 year ago

@alyaza
I go by hybrid havoc. I work in information technology for higher education, dealing largely with Ellucian Colleague and other peripheral applications. I am also the admin of https://darkfriend.social which is a Mastodon instance that was spun up for fans of the Wheel of Time fantasy series. I am a big fan of fantasy and science fiction in general.

Mostly my darkfriend.social account is my primary account on the Fediverse. I may occasionally post here from my beehaw account.

Osiyo!

Late 20s Cherokee in the southeast. Love books, storytelling, art, music and figuring out how things work and fixing them when they break. Oh and also hats, tools, things tools go in, I could probably be here all day.

I spend a good chunk of my spare time working on mechanical things like car parts, machinery, electronics, whatever I can find in my own little lab that I set-up. Always love learning new things. Most recently I've been trying to learn as much as I can about audio equipment and how all that works.

[–] Lionir 6 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm Lionir but you can just call me Lio.

I'm a young adult and I've been involved, even if from quite a distance in the making of Beehaw. I speak French as I've notice a few others do.

I'm not sure how to present myself. I'd say I tend to be quite pragmatic in how I talk even though I think I'm generally rather emotionally aware and a good listener. I don't think that this means that my rationality is more important to me than my emotional sensibility but rather that I'm not really sure how to be useful outside of a pragmatic approach.

I have a wide range of interests. I advocate for privacy, freedom, better working conditions and more generally human rights. I think often about how power structures (for example, capitalism) affect people. I like to talk about what I think is good design. I enjoy anime and video games. I do some programming as I have my own website and maintain packages on Flathub. I'm always looking to learn new things!

I'm glad to see this place alive and well.

[–] ohokthatsgood 6 points 1 year ago

I just want to say I'm excited to be here! Feels like how message boards used to feel back in the day with the number of users not being crazy high like other social media platforms.

[–] bettyspaghetti 5 points 1 year ago

Hey y’all. I’m bettyspaghetti and I too am a Reddit refugee. I live in central Ohio. I’m a data engineer by day, artist by night (I paint and quilt). I’m a grouchy cusp of Gen X and Millennial. I have a Bernese Mountain Dog named Louie (he is a certified Good Boi). I love exploring the world (19 countries so far), playing baseball with my two boys, reading, making niche Spotify playlists, kayaking, laying in my hammock in the warm weather with the jazz cabbage and watching the night sky.

[–] whitehatbofh 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Hello to all. I'm yet another reddit refuge. Initially, I was quite bummed at the news about the API price out of the 3rd party apps that had made reddit at all usable. Having discovered Beehaw and Lemmy, I'm becoming quite glad. I'd already abandoned Twitter for Mastadon, but I never quite appreciated that the Fediverse was a thing until the Great Reddit Purge forced me to take a step back and re-evaluate my (digital) life.

I'm now quite glad those bastards are putting the last nail in that particular coffin. I've known the Internet from when it was young, and I remember the nettiquette of olde. This place has the feel of those days. It's nice and refreshing.

I'm an avid computer and cyber security geek with a love of reading, music, programming, sysadmining, teaching, and many other things. It's great to be here with ya'll, I'm excited to be part of this great community! :-)

Hi all! Another newbie here investigating Beehaw in the endless search for online connections. I love to chat about shared interests and get to know new people, so in that spirit here's a non-exhaustive list of things I'll probably end up posting about:

Crafts of all kinds (cross stitch, knitting, sewing, 3d printing, etc etc), web and game development, Eurovision, NFL, snooker, being awkward and weird, Discworld books, scifi, gaming (mostly of the cozy indie variety but sometimes of the rock and stone, bug-shooting variety), trying to recapture my old goth style before I hit 40.

If you share one or more of these interests, well, hello there!

[–] Shadow 5 points 1 year ago

Hello! I've discovered Beehaw a few months ago, but then I never really used it till now, as the new Reddit update is happening. I am living near Eastern USA. I am interested in languages (more specifically constructed languages), psychology, and gaming. Can't wait to see how this community goes!

[–] wispi 5 points 1 year ago

Greetins <:

I'm into digital art (esp. character design), synthesizers and audio production techniques, ambient music, programming/software eng, reading, hobbyist gardening and plant-keeping...

My pronouns are she/her and I live in the PNW. Generally just trying to vibe and meet likeminded queer people!

[–] effingnerd 5 points 1 year ago

Hello all! I'm in my early 40s, living in the PNW. I've been a bartender most of my adult life, and got a liver transplant not too long ago. I've been spending my time since recovering from nearly dying, going back to school for a career change, and in general being more mindful of how I want to spend my limited time in existence.

[–] Daedalus 5 points 1 year ago

Hi! Long-time reddit and fediverse lurker. Expecting to stop lurking reddit since I can't stand its official website/app. I write random lowish-level open source things (C++,D,Rust) mostly for my own use. I also bake and I'm trying to clean up and open source my recipes (see https://codeberg.org/Kiith/recipes/src/branch/master/vanilkove-rozky.md). Based on some browsing this seems like the sanest lemmy instance.

[–] xorels 5 points 1 year ago (8 children)

Howdies!!

I'm xorels, a queer (she/her) Irish woman studying cybersecurity. I also game, crochet, and am learning Japanese.

I've lately been trying to degoogle and move away from large corporations and towards FOSS software, so joining Beehaw was partly inspired by that and partly by... Reddit. Both the API change and the toxicity on that site. I got sick of reporting harassment and [minority]-phobia and getting ignored, or harassed myself for speaking up. I can't leave it entirely for a few reasons but at least I can cut down my usage.

I generally don't post online, I prefer to lurk or comment, but I'll try and change that if I can. I'm a big fan of the positivity and friendly, nice attitude on here.

I'm Gris:

I'm a medical student in the US and a refugee from reddit. I have a lot of different interests that vaguely align with what seems to be the topics of interest here. Things like politics, technology, ethics/philosophy, science(particularly as it relates to the life sciences and medicine).

I chose this instance of Lemmy specifically due to it's fairly neutral stance to content and the general push for conscientious community interaction (and the generalized focus on a few different subjects, rather than left-wing politics being a central theme pushed me here rather than some other instances I looked at) .

[–] soiling 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

hello. I'm a reddit lurker glad to potentially have more community, but we'll see if I can stick it out. I think reddit persisted in my life because I didn't log in almost ever :)

anyway: I'm a software engineer, queer (they/them), near-vegan, and happily autistic. here to talk about surviving to 2040. interested in books, video games (currently 11 years into my longest rimworld save), spiders, gay memes, sustainability, trans rights, and noninvasive home tech.

[–] Humanoid 5 points 1 year ago

Hello, Beehaw!

I am yet another humanoid joining the exodus from Reddit. My hope is that I can find more mindful, positive communities than the ones I'm leaving behind, and be more thoughtful about the way I engage with online content. Beehaw's philosophy seems to fit me like a glove and, between this place and Tildes, I'm optimistic that I've found new spaces to put down my digital roots.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest (US). My interests are all over the place and shift depending on the season, but generally: reading, writing, music (punk rock in particular), psychology, philosophy, politics, geopolitics, history, etc. I value decentralization and autonomy in a general sense, so I think moving over to a federated system will fit me better in an ethical sense.

Thank you to Beehaw for accepting my application, I am very pleased to be amongst such nice folks! I hope to see you all around.

[–] GooseDwarf 5 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Hi there, Nice to meet everyone.

I go by GooseDwarf, I'm a tech enthusiast, who also enjoys video games, tabletop games, and reading SciFi and Fantasy. Like many others, I'm working on leaving Reddit, and after seeing people mention Lemmy, and seeing Beehaw at the top of the recommended, decided to give this community a try.

Hello!

Like many others, I discovered Lemmy following the announcement of the Reddit API changes.

I had previously explored Mastodon, but to be honest I wasn't a big Twitter user in the first place, so I didn't really get the point.

However, I used Reddit extensively, and while Lemmy has plenty of differences its similar enough to enjoy using so far.

As far as other social sites I've used, I started off on the SA Forums, and also used Fark before going to Digg. When Digg made its big v4 change or whatever, I went to Reddit. Seems I keep jumping ship haha.
