Resist: It's Time

We are still in this together, but "this" is going to be real different in the very near future. This demands a different kind of "we."

The French Resistance during Nazi occupation played important roles delivering downed Allied airmen back to safety, supplying military intelligence, and acts of sabotage.

The Underground Railroad is estimated to have brought 100,000 freedom seekers to safety between 1810 and 1850.

It's time.

Amazon Shopping Alternatives (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 19 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) by VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone to c/Resist@fedia.io

To follow up my previous post, I did some research on alternatives to Amazon Shopping to suggest to anyone interested in ditching Amazon. Note that I have not personally read each company's mission statement. AFAIK, all of these businesses are registered as B Corporations.

If anyone has any reasons that any of these sites aren't a good replacement for Amazon (ie shitty business practices), please let me know so that I can reconsider their inclusion on this list. If anyone has more suggestions as well, I'm all ears. I'll be working on an infographic with this same information as well, to be more easily spread throughout social media.

Chewys Ryan Cohen is kinda going off the right deep end.. I personally wouldn't buy from them.

Thanks for the list

B Corps mean nothing to me any more, since I learned that Arbonne is one. For those not in the know, that is a multi-level marketing scheme like Cutco, LuLaRoe, and Younique.

Besides that though, thanks for putting together this list!

When it comes to things like this, here is the order in which I try to consume...

  • if it's something I already had, repair it if possible
  • live without it
  • repurpose something I already have
  • find it secondhand
  • buy it from a local small to medium sized business or individual
  • buy it online from a small to medium sized business or individual
  • buy it from a local business
  • buy it online from a large business
  • buy it from Amazon

I’ve ordered from uncommon goods in the past. This is not being critical of them, just want to put my experience. It’s all shipped from China, so set expectations on quality and shipping time. It took 4 weeks for my gift to come.

Nice list, but your links don't work for me--they all go to something like https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/hivebrands.com instead of https://hivebrands.com/ .

Hmm, could be an issue with inter-instance posting. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'll try to fix that ASAP.

EDIT: Should be fixed now. Thank you!

Also for books there is kobo. I was going to recommend indiebound, but I guess that became bookshop.org! I remember indiebound didn't haveost of the books I wanted to read.

For computer parts there is microcenter.

For groceries, any local independent grocery store will hurt corporations more than most things you can do.

buying at brick and mortars will also hurt amazon, especially all mom and pop shops.

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 15 hours ago

Your point about brick and mortar stores is true, but my intention is to provide more 1:1 replacements to Amazon's delivery services.

Most Amazon users know they can go out and get the same products at stores, but they use Amazon for the convenience of having the item delivered. Furthermore, some people use online stores due to disabilities.

I'll be sure to add a note on the infographic about the effectiveness of buying locally at physical stores. Thank you so much for your recommendations!
