So i was looking around some stuff and discovered AssaultCube, i do remember hearing it's open source so i thought that topic might fit here (feel free to correct me if i am wrong)

I have been wanting to try that for sometime now but was worried if the game was dead or not (i won't mind if the playerbase is small or big, all i care about is if there's servers still running and if there's still people in it) and this might be a dumb question to ask since idk if there's any AssaultCube players or if there is even anyone here that knows it's existence but is the game alive at all? if not, are there alternatives that are more active? (AssaultCube-like or not, just any open source shooter game will do fine and i've already tried xonotic, good game and will play that again sometime lol)

Gosh that's a throwback. If it's not alive maybe we should make it be again!!

Hell yeah!! old games should always be kept alive even if it's being kept alive by a small community, they are always fun just like how some newer, modern games are

Holy fuck I used to play this on school computers during lunch. When I played it was pretty easy to end up in active games, but I'm not sure how that's changed over time. I really should reinstall it for nostalgia's sake.

I didn't expect so many people in the comments expressing their nostalgia cause of my post, i think i opened up a whole box of people's memories that are now unlocked because of my post LMAO

But yeah damn playing the game even back then sounds fun as hell lol, i always loved old as hell games since they always have this charm to it that i can't explain.. though ig it's cause i have an interest in old stuff in general. I'll probably install it and see if there's anything left (i would imagine it'll be either bots to keep the game to not feel lonely or it'll be a small community keeping the game alive)

Yeah I used to play so much AssaultCube! Over 14 years ago now 😅

14 years ago... damn now i wonder what the community was like in it's peak prime, whenever i visit empty servers or whatever and hell whenever i read old messages sent by players (whether it's on forums or something), it always feels like i'm looking at an ancient relic and that's actually something i always loved, especially when looking at old posts from a community that was once big.

Apparently we have all fragged each other at some time in the past because 14+ years ago I used to live on the AssaultCube servers, I was in competing clans and an admin on dozens of servers. Good times, I miss them.

But AssaultCube was just the frag scene at that time, before that it was DoD and before that it was the granddaddy of them all Team Fortress, not the modern TF2, the original that was included on the Half-Life 1 CD, that community was huge and very family like, does anybody here remember the website/community TheVille?

To answer OP's question, your only luck for real live human players (not bots) and non-cheaters is to find a small community of die-hards as mentioned above. If they don't let you in after proving to them your not a Llama then they are A-holes anyway and not worth your effort.

Dang, I played the crap out of this over a decade ago, nostalgic lol.

Unless there is a small dedicated community that you can find of players, your best bet is probably to get some friends/family to play it with you.

I would imagine there's a small community still keeping it alive, it's just like what happened to day of defeat or team fortress classic.. there's a small percentage of people still playing it, at least it seems like it (i think counter strike source or 1.6 had the same thing happen too despite the fact counter strike 2/CSGO exists)

Xonotic is still quite active!
