Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 users will not be able to uninstall the controversial “Recall” feature, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Recall, part of the Copilot+ suite announced in May, automatically captures screenshots of user activity on the operating system including sensitive information such as passwords or financial data https://digitalmarketreports.com/news/25091/microsoft-recall-feature-on-windows-11-not-removable-after-all/ Do yourself a favor and get rid of Windows from your life—enough of these greedy companies. #privacy #security

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

It’s unbelievable…

[–] DEDGirl@mastodon.world 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I haven’t had a windows pc in 20 years, but I have an Xbox. I do these daily searches & things for rewards points, often in bing or edge, & I really despise it every time. It’s always broken or failing in some way & it’s a benign, nothing of a task. I would die a slow painful death if I had to do anything like work or business on this OS!

[–] delProfundo@aus.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social 😂

[–] lumiworx@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social ... I have one PC loaded with 11 as a sort of testbed device.

After reading about this last night, I ordered new SSD's and it will absolutely have a fresh Linux install by the weekend.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social What are some good user friendly alternatives?

[–] Monsieur_Lepetit@toot.community 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social reading this is making me mad, cos now I have to learn how to unix.
The "right, that does it" point is reached

[–] nub235@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social This is when you switch to Linux. If anyone reading this doesn't know what distro to use, go to distrochooser.de

[–] gloopsies@fosstodon.org 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

This is the best Windows feature yet. My parents agreed to try out Linux for the first time because of it. Thank you Microsoft <3

[–] 3BearNight@mstdn.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social So, if it's part of CoPilot; would uninstalling CoPilot remove everything, including recall?

[–] SpaceLifeForm@infosec.exchange 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

The problem is getting businesses off of Windows.

Treadmill inertia is hard to stop.

[–] Tag365@mstdn.party 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Epic Fail right there. I might install Linux Mint instead of paying for Windows 11.

[–] faramir@piaille.fr 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

I have Linux Mint for about 15 years and I'm very very happy with it !!!

but you may prefer Windows !

[–] megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

This guy will probably include a Recall remover sooner or later. Winaero Tweaker so far does not seem to have one, but probably will too.

I'm just freezing my Windows partitions at Win 10 Pro and not letting them 11 themselves.

[–] ReversalHatchery 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

don't worry, with time an update will install recall to 10, just like they backported their massive telemetry to 7

[–] megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@ReversalHatchery True, but then there'll be a blocker for *that* update! :)

@nixCraft@mastodon.social can one of you IT managers or related explain to me whether Recall is baked in #Windows11 per se, or whether it is dependent only on #Copilot+ being enabled? I am confused by this from @theverge "Security researchers initially found that the #Recall database wasn’t encrypted. #Microsoft is now making the AI-powered feature an opt-in experience instead of on by default, encrypting the database, and authenticating through Windows Hello."

[–] Shaltiar@c.im 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social HIPAA violation

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I'm just presuming Winaero Tweaker will have a way to cripple it. I need to give that crew some money.

[–] yoused@talkedabout.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social It is called “Recall”. How can they recall Recall?

[–] idahobucks@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social no one should be moving to the new Windows OS. It is essentially the US government and mass surveillance. Linux is not that hard anymore.

[–] codecrafters@mastodon.bsd.cafe 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social MSDOS must reborn! It was best from microsoft

[–] bigpawedbear@masto.nu 1 points 2 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social though you can switch it off, and it will only be on certain pcs too, so called co pilot enabled pcs with certain chips in them.

[–] leean00@discuss.systems 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@nixCraft@mastodon.social How do you remove this crap?

Working anywhere they use Windows you have no choice.

[–] melroy@mastodon.melroy.org 1 points 4 months ago

@leean00@discuss.systems @nixCraft@mastodon.social resign.

[–] irregularjoe@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I'll never install Windows 11.

[–] rxx256@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social As always, switch to Linux

[–] tanavit@toot.aquilenet.fr 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

That is "making profit". By any mean.

[–] garo@dragonscave.space 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I always knew that something is wrong with Windows. Seriously. Glad that my computer isn't even able to be updated to Windows 11. If I have too, I'll stick to even the outdated versions of Windows 10.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Linux isn't an option for me, so it's a choice between greedy company A and greedy company B. 🤷

[–] Bruce_Toews@caneandable.social 1 points 2 months ago

@frog67@tweesecake.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social That article goes back to September 15. This is from Microsoft itself and is dated September 27th. It states that Windows Recall can be removed; it also gives a very extensive explanation of the "feature"..

[–] jeffehobbs@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

@nixCraft@mastodon.social This is kind of deceptive language, no? It can be disabled. That's functionally equivalent?

[–] ReversalHatchery 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

until it mysteriously gets re-enabled by itself, as it is usual with updates.

today I have just found that even though I have disabled reporting start menu searches to bing on my parents' PC in windows 10, it still does it! I have double checked the registry setting, updated O&O ShutUp10 and turned the setting off and back on. it. does. not. care.

[–] AngelaScholder@mastodon.energy 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Well, many people will just say that they have nothing to hide.....
Totally ignorant of everything they do hide.

[–] niavy@masto.bike 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social

My next computer will likely be full Linux Mint.

[–] AngelaScholder@mastodon.energy 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I'm using W10 Pro on the netbook and mini desktop and already that one has become a full job to keep it tamed.
It was removing all the unwanted gaming crap, the advertising s***, the 'ET phone home', the 'You should backup in OneDrive', etc, etc...
It is that some software I need doesn't have an alternative on Ubuntu, sigh!

[–] bunni@raru.re 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social so if I understand correctly, it's opt-in (not running by default), but can't be uninstalled
Which I think is very microsoft. Tons of stuff on windows can't be uninstalled

(Like, I agree linux is better, but I don't think recall changes anything if it's how microsoft say it works. Ofc if they're lying it's something else)

[–] RadioAzureus@mastodon.social 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social just recall win64 with #fdisk or #gparted after dataBQ then choose a #POSIX #OS

@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org

[–] cardboard@blimps.xyz 1 points 4 months ago

@nixCraft@mastodon.social urgh for fucks sake why can't they just stop pushing bullshit features?
