Wang Wenbin: Let me first reiterate China’s long-standing position that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be observed, that the legitimate security concerns of all countries must be taken seriously, and that all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of crises must be supported. On the Ukraine issue, China always stands on the side of peace and has been committed to promoting peace talks. We are ready to work with the international community and continue to play a constructive part in deescalating the situation.

The Security Council, as the core of the international collective security mechanism, needs to make full use of the mediation tools provided for in the UN Charter and steer the situation in the right direction of ending the fighting and promoting dialogue. The Council needs to take constructive and responsible actions in particular to accumulate conditions and open up space for a political resolution.

You could read this as "China’s long-standing position that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected (breakaway regions held a referendum to join Russia, that must be respected)", but it's very hard to read it that way when you consider the case of Taiwan

China doesn't really care about Ukraine, only what Ukraine could mean to them in terms of China's ownership over Taiwan

And if challenged in the future, they'll make sure to creatively reinterpret any past statements to be in line with current interests. China cares about China. That's fine, but people shouldn't have any illusions.

Like not being encroached by NATO despite multiple promises.

Also in caase of Donbas not being murdered for not supporting the coup going explicitly against them is legit security concern too.

In that entire quote from 3 posts above, they basically said nothing they did not said before. Read: they won't take any open action.

Might want to read up on why those parts are now part of Ukraine. Hint, they weren't always part of Ukraine and was transferred by the USSR who figured that there would always be freedom of movement between them so it doesn't really matter, kind of like how the demarcation of states in the US aren't walls.

Might wanna read up on why Moscow is now part of Russia. Hint, they weren’t always part of Russia and was transferred by the Mongol Empire who figured that there would always be freedom of movement between them so it doesn’t really matter, kind of like how the demarcation of states in the US aren’t walls.

You know, Spain and the entire EU has been going on real hard about Taiwan lately, maybe they should address things like... Catalonia.

Or the UK with Northern Ireland.

Or the US with Hawai'i, oh but it's only the Indigenous Hawaiians that want independence so who cares. Same with Alaska, go and ask any Inuit community if they like being an oil state or not. Actually, ask any Indigenous people in the US if they like being in the US. Same with Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

Call it whataboutism all you want, but I'm one of those weird people who think that there's something to be said about if you accuse another country of human rights abuses, whether they're true or not, maybe you shouldn't do the exact same thing. It's kind of like you're accusing someone of killing people while jamming a knife into someone else's chest, is that whataboutism?

Hint, both Taiwan and HK are much more independent from Mainland China than Catalonia, Northern Ireland, Hawai'i, or Alaska, or any Indigenous nation, from their respective ruling countries.

Yeah? And if it had gotten majority leave vote do you seriously think the Canadian government would have actually acted upon it? Did Harper look like the kind of guy to just say "well, if this is what you want, you're a grown up province now! Go out there and see the world!"

This actually aligns with everything China --

Korean War, they only attacked South Korea after South Korea pushed all the way to China
They haven't really started any wars with foreign countries (I hate to whataboutism, but "unlike the US")
Their policy on Taiwan has always been "Taiwan is an internal affair, so we don't care what the world thinks"
