A couple of months ago there where 30+ likes on meme posts etc. Nowadays it seems like posts on beehaw.org are upvoted more than lemmy.ml.

Did this change come with the latest lemmy update that gave everyone those language errors?

I don't really think Lemmy.ml will have very good retention of new users. Because:

  1. New users will mostly come from reddit or mastodon.
  2. Most users of reddit and mastodon willing to leave are anti corporate, anti authoritarian, anti-war, pro human rights.
  3. A lot of posts that you see on Lemmy (either from Lemmy.ml or lemmygrad) are pro-russia, pro china or anti-western to the point of being really annoying. Its not fun to talk to people without a hint of nuance.

So it is not surprising that new users will get turned off by this and leave (or move to beehaw).

I confess to trying and then leaving lemmy.ml in a huff because I allowed myself to get dragged into an argument with some asshole. I came back (to Beehaw) when I heard about a potential reddit exodus, and thought I'd give it another chance.

I also gave up my lemmy.ml account due to dumb dumbs. Definitely don't use the internet as an avenue to argue.

You don't like reading 6 paragraphs of mental backflips explaining how it's actually the US who needs to stop the aggression so we can have peace in Ukraine??

[–] gloating_swann 12 points 2 years ago

Indeed. And yet it's amazing how easy it is to get sucked in to something not even worth arguing about.

Not only that the posts are the way they are, but the mods themselves are really supportive of this as well. Even from the fact that they:

a. Do not ban/censor in any way people having these views
b. They ban you if you say anything about their beloved Russia or China because you are somehow racist against Russians or against Chinese for that matter.

Here's one entry from their mod log, for example:

(yes, I know you can easily find it, but I censored the names anyway for privacy reasons FWIW)

Edit: I forgot to mention that they are hugely disrespectful when countering arguments they don't agree with. See threads like this where they leak around this place as well. Perhaps they are not all like that, but the most vocal and active users are. I am totally for being countered myself, as long as you have arguments, and you can tell me in a respectful way that I'm wrong. But the moment you're bringing in personal attacks, is the moment I'm no longer willing to have any meaningful discussion with you. Period.

What bothers me the most is that lemmy.ml removed leftist from its description about a year ago, and the communities do not list it either. Yet yogthos and others continue to spam propaganda without consequence, while for example @0x815@feddit.de gets banned for this reason. TheAnonymouseJoker's slanders and accusations ("white supremacist", "facist", "nazi apologist", "mindless drones") aren't removed, @Mandelorian@mander.xyz's "Tankie" is.

It's just arbitrary at this point, and I'm glad my instance admin banned them from our timeline, so that I don't have to see either of them.

I totally agree, they have the most toxic userbase and the most ridiculous moderation, partly attracted and supported by the devs/mods.
Unfortunately, these instances are perceived as "official", so, many users will be put off in the first place.
For this reason, imho the lemmy-project will unfortunately never reach a significant range.

[–] petrescatraian@libranet.de 10 points 2 years ago

@nachtigall wow, yes, forgot about these double standards of them as well

[–] loki@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 years ago

ya, this just irks people in the wrong way. First they said they were for civil discussion, and then they were not. The lemmy developer seems onboard with all of this, and that just strains the whole environment. It's just turning out to be polar opposite of Reddit and first impressions seems like you're leaving one echo chamber for another.

They allow federation and I can join other instances, but I wouldn't be staying on Lemmy if it didn't.

Same. The strong pro-authoritarian-regimes views of many posters on Lemmy.ml also turned me off. They're of course free to discuss those viewpoints but it's not a community I wanted to interject myself into. And with Lemmy.ml and Lemmygrad being the two top sites of the Lemmyverse it made me wonder if this platform was really for me. Fortunately I found Beehaw to be a community which feels more comfortable in this respect.

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 years ago

I'm thinking of joining beehaw for this very reason. I like lemmy, been on here a while (and used to browse without an account for longer), but lemmygrad and tankies spoil lemmy.ml and it's not getting better as I'd hoped. I still stayed so far, because until recently these two were the only instances with any activity, but now that's changing.
