lots of web devs / software engineers in here!

what's your work like? i sit at a computer for ~7 hours a day (1 hour break for lunch), either at home, at the coworking space, or rarely at the office. the company is a small business, less than 20 employees. they've been around for going on 15 years, i think, so they're not trying to expand! grow! conquer! which is part of what i like about it here. i've been here nearly ~~four~~ five years now. all my other tech jobs were usually 1 year, then i was out the door. last place i spent 3 years in basically wrote me off after i was injured, so... yeah.

what do you do? i make wordpress websites. mostly nonprofits, but the laywers and higher ed pays the company enough that we can discount the nonprofit orgs (and even do some pro bono work). i primarily write HTML, twig, and less, with a wee bit of JS and PHP thrown in when needed.

do you enjoy it? absolutely! i've been making websites since i was a wee child (okay, 13 years old). i spent one semester in college before i realized i actually hate lectures and papers, which is 99% of college. found out i could make money doing something i already knew without a degree, so here we are.

is there something you wish you could be doing professionally instead? i occasionally think about dog training as a profession, but i think it would probably ruin the fun in training my own dogs, which i do as a hobby.

what are some past workplace experiences you’d like to share? watching silicon valley is painful because, while it's not exactly what i do, it's too close. when i (femme presenting, afab) have said something in a meeting, it's been repeated by a man who got the credit for the idea. it's really weird to watch it happen in real time. thankfully i've been around long enough and my coworkers at this place are aware of that, so it really doesn't happen anymore.
