Your local NIMBYs don't like barrier-protected on-road bike lanes?

But you have wide footpaths?

Consider doing what Klaipeda (in Lithuania) did, and put your painted bike lane on the footpath, rather than the road.

Yeah, it's not an ideal solution, but it's better than fighting traffic.

we have this in my city. pedestrians do not know how to deal with cyclists in what they perceive as their space-- and rightly so! The paint lines are a token separator and not readily noticed. As a cyclist, i almost rather take my chances with road traffic than risk colliding with and injuring a pedestrian.
