I was able to upload it with both an admin and a non-admin account:

One idea: microscopy image files can be very big. Perhaps imgur compressed it considerably, and that's why I was able to upload it after downloading it from there. How big is the original file that you tried uploading?

oh! i'm on the startrek.webpage lemmy site, i dont have my account here in mander. does that explain it?

No, I just tested. The .tif format is not supported by lemmy. When it is uploaded to imgur it is transformed into a .png, so it works then!

hmm, I exported the .tif into a .jpg, and into .png, and I still got the Syntax error when trying to upload in a new post?

Then I think it may be a problem with startrek.website

original image is 3.9Mb, its a tif made from the z stacks of the super huge .lsm files. is 3.9Mb too big for here? Sorry, I'm a new reddit refugee, learning how this lemmy thing works :)

Ah, sorry, I thought you had already looked at that. I deleted the test post after a bit - it was simply a post of the image made by a test account.
