It works the same as Apollo. You have to tap the text at the very top of the screen (be it the current community name, "All Posts", "Subscribed", etc.) and then you should be able to search for any communities tracked in the cache of your instance.
I just had to check. I don't think I've ever once used that search in Apollo. The reason it's unintuitive in mlem is that in Apollo it automatically brings up the keyboard and places the text insertion cursor. In mlem, it takes an extra tap with no ui indication.

That's a detail I agree should be added. On the other hand, the whole concept is, I believe, compliant and recommended by Apple's official HIG.
