I hate the stock app and I'm sick of handcent for a myriad of reasons. I'm looking for anything that's fully customizable and just works.

TiddlyWiki is a “non-linear personal web notebook,” as well as an exemplar project in the open source community. It can be a note-taking or information-ordering system in a similar vein to Obsidian or Notion, although TiddlyWiki was launched back in 2004. It can also be thought of as producing a wiki with interactive components.

However, as I discovered to my cost, TiddlyWiki has never had a strong “start here,” because it is not tailored to one specific task. Obsidian, by comparison, has the advantage of a clear vision of what it does. TiddlyWiki bewilders you with options at first because it hasn’t been designed to be sold. The community focus is on adapting it to different use cases.

So I’m going to take the advice in this explainer and use TiddlyDesktop while mentioning that there are plenty of other arrangements. It is, after all, just HTML and JavaScript. Let’s get started…

Hello again everyone, Dihar here. It's been a while since the last release of treedome, but here you go! This release is all about UI update, emojis, and bug fixes. Please consult this git diff for a more detailed changelog https://codeberg.org/solver-orgz/treedome/compare/0.4.5...0.5.0. These are the highlight of the release.

  • Add emoji picker for title, will show up in tree!
  • Text Editor toolbar is back, now with option to toggle both toolbar and floating menu independently!
  • Checkbox is here! Thanks Mantine UI!
  • You can check the size of each notes by navigating to Escape Menu -> Configure -> Show Note Sizes!
  • Add created/last modified date in notes. Note created before this will not have this field and will set as today's date!
  • Create child note can now be done through dropdown instead of only from shortcuts!
  • Fix bugs of saving empty tree
  • General UI update and more stability for auto scrolling in tree view
  • Documentation update

Last night Organic Maps was removed from the Play Store without any warnings or additional details due to "not meeting the requirements for the Family Program". Compared to Google Maps and other maps apps rated for 3+ age, there are no ads or in-app purchases in Organic Maps. We have asked for an appeal.

As a temporary workaround for the Google Play issue, you can install the new upcoming Google Play update from this link: https://cdn.organicmaps.app/apk/OrganicMaps-24081605-GooglePlay.apk

The Announcement on various Networks: Fosstodon Post
Twitter Post
Telegram Post

If you don't know what Organic Maps is, it is an alternative to OsmAnd and google maps, more info on the official site (link) and GitHub.

Maybe an error? Honestly this is a weird one. I hope we will learn more in the coming hours.

You can still get it on the other channels, like F-Droid or Obtainium. Still, we all know that not being on the Play Store is an heavy sentence for any Android app.

EDITs

  • Added F-Droid link.
  • Fixed Typo in the obtainium link.

The Sovereign Tech Fund is piloting a fellowship program to pay open source maintainers, aiming to address structural issues and support open digital infrastructure in the public interest.

Over the past two years, STF has successfully contracted over 40 FOSS projects, enhancing their technical sustainability through targeted milestones. While some contracts are with individual maintainers, most involve software development companies or foundations. Despite this success, a new and innovative program is needed to acknowledge the lived reality of how many maintainers work: stretched across multiple technologies, multi-faceted, and often behind the scenes.

Most maintainers are unpaid, working in their spare time, which both impacts projects’ stability and can lead to stress and burnout. The Tidelift Open Source Maintainer Study found that 59% of maintainers have quit or considered quitting, posing a risk to the digital infrastructure we all rely on. To even begin to mitigate this risk, it's crucial to understand the role of maintainers, who typically lead and oversee project development, review changes, manage community interactions, release updates, and fix security issues.

The application phase will start by the end of the third quarter of 2024, and with the goal that selected maintainers can begin the fellowship in the fourth quarter. The first fellowship pilot will run throughout 2025, and we will evaluate it on an ongoing basis. Based on these evaluations, our experiences running the fellowship, and feedback from participants, we’ll determine how to expand and grow the program for a stronger and healthier open source ecosystem.

Don't let the title fool you! This is not anti-FOSS!

I couldn't get any of the OS images to load on any of the browsers I tested, but they loaded for other people I tested it with. I think I'm just unlucky. > > Linux emulation isn't too polished.

Thanks to a few bug reports, my own attempt at writing a better (well, I tried! after all, it's in Rust...) alternative to youtube-dl has reached version 0.15.0 just two days ago.

As it uses a configurable Invidious instance to fetch videos from YouTube now (playlists remain yet to be solved), I imagined it could be - at least - interesting to some of you.

More of a showerthought, but still.

Yesterday, I just pulled out from the dead my opendesktop account and discovered that they are now offering multiple online services as well: There is GitLab, Mastodon and Nextcloud for pretty much anything you want. I, myself, am not a developer, so the most useful for me would be the latter two - specifically Nextcloud, where they offer a whopping (for me) 5 GB free storage.

I am not new to Nextcloud, as my Friendica node admin also provides a Nextcloud instance with some storage available, and the availability to increase it by mounting external storage sources, such as Amazon S3, WebDAV or even other Nextcloud mounts.

For note-taking, I am using Notable and keeping my notes in .md files, as this allows me to use just about any program I want to edit them on other devices (or switch from it seamlessly if I don't like it), but the way it works is to have a subfolder called notes on every "data directory" that you point it to. However, the Nextcloud notes app just wants to use the folder named in your default locale (in my case, it was called "Note")

So what did I do? I mounted the folder "Note" on opendesktop, as "notes" back on my node's Nextcloud server. On my phone, I do not have this issue, so I can use it with whatever name I want.

Now, I know I could simply use another note-taking app instead on my desktop, or just switch the locale on the other side. But I am sure there are plenty of use cases where a program just expects a certain folder to be somewhere, but you're unable to rename it there or use a different folder, so that is a welcome feature. And I now have the ability to access my notes both online and on whichever device I use, which is super handy.

Next-up, I plan to store some music there, as it also has a music app. Then I want to mount the folder as WebDAV on my phone, for foobar2000.

I just love Open Source 😁

Below there are some pics with the whole setup in action:

I'm looking for free simple special effects to overlay onto videos in KdenLive. Things like explosions, fire, and particle effects. Are there any good free or open source libraries for this kind of thing?

I am looking for a YouTube alternative client, where I can ideally import my subscriptions, and possible even like or comment on a Linux computer. Does such a thing exist?

Hi there,

I am searching for an Markdown Editor, with a similar Live-Preview feature to Obsidian. In particular, I do not want to split the view into source and preview, but have the preview as the main window and only switch to source code for the line/block I am currently editing. Nextcloud uses a similar feature for their in-browser editor, but I need an offline variant.

Do you have any suggestions?

I've recently become a fan of Sauerbraten's missions and searched for similar games. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to find ones that are a) free (as in freedom) and b) have missions (not tournament/arena style).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

PS: It would be great if the graphics were a bit more modern and the mechanics realistic.

Hi! I remember there beings talks about beehaw planning to eventually move to a lemmy alternative with proper moderation tools, and was interested in following the development of this alternative, but I've forgotten the name of the project and can't find the specific posts about the subject. Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

Been having too much fun using LLMs hosted locally, but can't seem to get Ollama's chat with documents to work well. Lots of "what are you talking about? There are no documents here" issues. Does anyone have any recommendations to either a) figure out what's going wrong or b) Alternative locally hosted options that chat with documents works well with (GPT4all or something?)
