Lemmy is better than mastodon, for me at least. There was nothing interesting going on at mastodon, but Lemmy is thriving.

I always hated quora, but somehow they got even worse.

Yeah, maybe it's an exit scam. I bet some executive said, "I'll give the higher up execs what they think they want (ADS) which is the opposite of what the users want, but we'll all get bonuses just before the site dies."

I like it. But it will only feel like home when people are sharing all the ideas, advice, questions, news, and most importantly, shit-posting, that I previously got from reddit.

Nah, we're just seizing a little corner where the bosses mostly leave us alone.

Right, but the content is also what draws people in. Not just the infrastructure. So if some of that money made its way back to mods and top posters then they would be feeding the community instead of charging them for the content that brings in more viewers.

It is actually kind of exciting. A lot of people have already jumped ship, and this has a good user experience.

I wonder if advice posts will start appearing in search results.

I’m not about to pay a corporation for content generated for free by us

That's actually a good point. I don't mind paying for access to an app, since it costs money to maintain, but our posts draw people into the site to read advice, news, and funny stuff. If Reddit is going full-monetization, there should at least be some payment for... upvotes? Views?

This is major news. I really hated that word.

The Mastodon culture just isn't there yet. And it's a bit of work to actually use. Plus "toots" sounds even more stupid than "tweets" and I'm not sure it will ever really take off.

I wonder if the AB values are stored in a cookie...
