https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_synagogue_shooting

This 2018 mass shooting took place soon after Columbia University and the Anti-Defamation League independently reported a spike in antisemitic activity online, especially on the popular social networking platforms Instagram and Twitter.[27][28][29][30] In addition, other antisemitic acts had been committed elsewhere.[31]

The immediate rise in the months of August to October 2018 was attributed to rising tensions associated with advertising for the 2018 U.S. midterm elections.[32] A similar rise in online attacks had occurred during the 2016 US election,[27] with the midterms being a "rallying point" for far-right extremists to organize efforts to spread antisemitism online among the populace.[28] In 2017, there was a 57% rise in antisemitic incidents in the United States,[30][29] in context of rising hate crimes against other groups, including Muslims and African Americans, as reported by the FBI.[30] For instance, hundreds of Jewish gravestones were vandalized in Pennsylvania and Missouri,[28] and antisemitic incidents on university campuses doubled in number.[31]

In August 2017, the widely publicized Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia featured Nazi symbols, salutes, and the slogan "Blood and Soil",[31] among other racist and antisemitic rhetoric. Considerable antisemitic material was being spread online via conspiracy theories about wealthy Jewish individuals, including billionaire George Soros. Columbia University's Jon Albright said that these represented the "worst sample" of all the hate speech he had seen on Instagram.

All under Trump.

Face-eating leopards won't be going hungry for a long time.

The shilling never stops. He's turned the White House into a fucking car dealership.

And he was probably dumb enough to buy the undercoat and extended warranty.

Anyone hear if they fired the Dept. Of Education Inspector General's SWAT team?

Because for a while there, the far right couldn't shut up about the "Orwellian" horror of it.

But I guess now the Dear Leader has (illegally) dismissed all Inspectors General, presumably soon to be replaced by true believers taking orders direct from His Orangeness, they will all of sudden stop having a problem with the DoE-IG having a SWAT team at their disposal and it's, like, totally not Orwellian.

“He then essentially explained to me that Mel Gibson has a personal relationship with President Trump and that should be sufficient basis for me to make a recommendation and that I would be wise to make the recommendation,” she said.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrimonialism

Patrimonialism is a form of governance in which the ruler governs on the basis of personal loyalties which are derived from patron-client relations, personal allegiances, kin ties and combinations thereof.[1] Patrimonialism is closely related to corruption, opportunism and machine politics.[2] It can contribute to underdevelopment and weak state capacity.[3]

In contrast to many other systems of governance, the ruler does not derive their legitimacy from their personal charisma or a sense of mission, but primarily through their ability to dole out rewards and punishments.[1][2] Initially coined by Max Weber, patrimonialism stands in contrast to rational-legal bureaucracies, as there is no objective of efficiency in public administration and government staff are not advanced based on merit, experience and training.

Born January 3, 1956, Peekskill, New York, U.S.A. Family moved to Australia in 1968, so that the sons wouldn't get drafted and sent to fight people Mel probably has some choice words to describe when he's had a few.

Just found the response:

Dear President Trump and the Republican Party of the United States,

Canada is a federation of 10 provinces, each with sovereignty equal to, if not greater than, the states in your Union, whose sovereignty and rights you are such great champions of.

Therefore Canada would not become the 51st state. It would become the 51st, 52nd, 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th, 58th, 59th and 60th states. Each with two senators and a proportional number of representatives in Congress.

Your kind offer of joining your Union has been accepted. Please prepare accommodations for 20 new senators and dozens of new representatives, and kindly inform Senator John Thune and Congressman Mike Johnson there will be new elections for Senate majority leader and Speaker of the House.

Please do not worry about security for the new senators and representatives, which will be provided by units of Joint Task Force 2 that will be arriving shortly in the DC Metro area.

Looking forward to working with you,

Yours truly,

Canada

Working fine in the web browser. (Service: FreshRSS. Host: cheredeprince.net.)

I haven't been able to get it working in an Android app yet (tried Capy Reader and Readrops), but that might be because I don't know anything about making FreshRSS or those apps work. I'll keep trying.

The engaging story, painstaking animation, and box-office success of “Ne Zha 2” have inspired a great deal of pride among the Chinese movie-going public, not to mention birthing a plethora of memes, trends, and social-media hashtags. But this surge of pride has also resulted in the suppression of critical takes on the film and the buzz around it: some critical articles have been deleted from social media platforms, and Chinese bloggers and reviewers have reported being criticized or attacked online for expressing dissenting views.

HEAVY ONLINE CENSORSHIP OF ARTICLES CRITICAL OF ANIMATED CHINESE BLOCKBUSTER “NE ZHA 2”

Just used one of the hosts listed there to have newsfeed aggregation, alternative to my current Feedly, and to general algorithmic social media doomscrolling controlled by big US or Chinese tech.

I'm unfamiliar with Fresh RSS but I signed up with cheredeprince and have already added a feed, reading it on my PC.

Not sure how to use it on my phone yet.

Using Linux Mint 22.1 Xfce. cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/40243032

New to Lemmy.

And new to workspaces. I'd get confused at first which workspace I was on.

Different backgrounds helped a bit, but I'm almost always in maximized windows.

I wanted to have different colours for windows, panel etc but couldn't.

So I adjusted panel opacity to 95% on Enter, 75% on Leave. That allows the background colour to bleed through.

A user on the Linux Mint forums suggested adjusting workspace margins to let the background show even when windows are maximized.

So now I have an 8-pixel strip of desktop showing just above the panel. Combined with the lowered panel opacity, I never have to wondr anymore what workspace I'm on.

  • Workspace [1/2/3] with windows minimized.
  • Workspace [1/2/3] with window maximized, panel at "Leave" opacity of 95%.
  • Workspace [1/2/3] with window maximized, panel at "Enter" opacity of 75%.

(I read somewhere that it's better to host images for Lemmy on Pixelfed. So I made my first post there with all the screenshots, and linked to it. Hope that works.)

PS: Anyone have any other ideas to help distinguish workspaces at a glance?

On the database website, I didn't see any alternatives to GitHub, or even a category for that I could submit to.

"Software development, collaboration & hosting"?

Here are some:

Alternative to... lots of stuff: GitHub, Google, Gmail, Google Docs, Discord, Skype, Reddit, Twitter etc

  • Disroot (Netherlands, non-profit)

Alternative to Microsoft VS Studio Marketplace (extensions for VS Studio IDE)
