Cool. I think I'm going to give it a few days in case I deleted someone I didn't want to. If I hear no complaints (I'm pretty sure I'm the only real local user on my instance anyway ๐) I'll delete out the db. Thanks!
Did you actually delete them or set the deleted column? I'm anxious of leaving dangling references which might cause errors to pop up elsewhere but I'd rather get rid of them completely if that doesn't seem to cause problems.
I also found it wasn't reflected in the user count until I manually manipulated the site_aggregates
table. I don't know if that would have caught up eventually.
Hey! I've been caught up in this. Have closed registration for now but what do I do with the created accounts? Unless I'm missing something I can't find the admin tools to deal with users except through their posts (and they haven't posted anything).
I can't remember where I found out about it but I think it may have been on Atlas Obscura. Before we moved here my wife and I made a list of places we wanted to visit and this was quite high up!
Hey! Good point, thanks! To be honest I don't really like the picture and was on my phone when I realised it didn't have one so just uploaded a relevant photo without thinking about the implication! I've scaled it down now.
Also, welcome!
I've a Pixelbook I bought on the day of release. I'm dreading the day it eventually gives up because I've still seen nothing I'll want to replace it with when that day comes.
I'm feeling like I should add a sausage to mine!
Oh wow! I only just realised you were talking from your Mastodon account and I'm on a a thread on Lemmy. I'm completely amazed at how well that works!
I completely agree.
Also lemmy's UI is shocking, especially on mobile. Although I've spent much of my career working on that sort of stuff so I wonder if I'm over-sensitive to it. Which suggests maybe I should have a look and see if I can offer some improvements. I think a few small fixes would go a long way.
I've had the same problem in the reverse direction.
My understanding is that kbin and Lemmy aren't necessarily working perfectly together at the moment. Although I heard a lot of that was to do with kbin using Cloudflare protection, which I think they've turned off now.
Things here certainly aren't as mature as Mastodon yet but hopefully more users will drive more development.
I'll have a look into this stuff better once I'm on my laptop instead of my phone!
I think the power of the fediverse is in there being more, smaller servers. It makes moderation easier and should scale better. It prevents one person or group getting control over the whole network.
The advantages of having your own server are about having control over the instance. I can choose which servers I do it don't federate with. Also I know my data isn't being misused. Plus, to be honest, I've got lots of experience running this sort of thing and I like the idea of offering the benefits of that to the community.
In my case I decided to base my Mastodon server and Lemmy server on my local area. I like the idea that the local timelines and local posts would be relevant for that geographic community.
Running your own server isn't for everyone though. It takes a certain amount of commitment and money. I get some donations - which are lovely - but I'm still basically funding it out of my own pocket.
After thinking it through, I don't think it really matters. There's no need for a local instance on Lemmy. I agree a local group would be really great but I don't think there's the critical mass on here needed to help one take off and if it did, it'd be just as good on another instance.
It feels more like the Mastodon server https://mcr.wtf is a much better place to put my energy. Although it's still very small, I'm happy with that because it still gives myself, and other users, a useful to engage with the fediverse and I think there's much more scope for growth there.
