Posted this in a small community, curious to know what everyone here thinks.

Let me preface by saying, I would love to hear counter points and am fully open to the fact that I could be wrong and totally out of touch. I just want to have some dialogue around something that’s been bothering me in the fediverse.

More and more often I keep hearing people refer to “normies”. I think by referring to other people as “normies”, whether you intend to or not, you inadvertently gatekeep and create an exclusive environment rather than an inclusive one in the fediverse.

If I was not that familiar with the fediverse and decided to check it out and the first thing I read was a comment about “normies”, I would quite honestly be very put off. It totally has a negative connotation and doesn’t even encapsulate any one group. I just read a comment about someone grouping a racist uncle and funny friend into the same category of normie because they aren’t up to date on the fediverse or super tech savvy or whatever.

I don’t want to see any Meta bs in the fediverse. I barely want to see half of the stuff from Reddit in the fediverse. I don’t want to see the same echo chamber I do everywhere else.

I do want to see more users and more perspectives and a larger user base though. I want to see kindness and compassion. I want to talk to people about topics they are interested in. I want to have relevant discussions without it dissolving into some commentary on some unrelated hot topic thing.

I think calling people normies creates a more toxic, exclusive place which I personally came here to avoid.

Just my two cents! I know for most people using the term it isn’t meant to be malicious, but I think it comes off that way.

Love to hear all of your thoughts.

Yeah point taken for sure. I would hope the kbin and lemmy servers I am apart of block federation with Meta.

Lol no I do not want Facebook content. I think I probably didn’t explain myself properly. I hope the fediverse gains more legitimacy and exposure to more people because of this and some of them come to lemmy and kbin and others. I don’t want anything to do with Facebook or it’s algorithms.

EDIT from my other comment:

I mean isn’t that the beauty of it? You don’t have to subscribe to anything meta and you can join servers that actively block it. I think it’s a good thing if it gets more users on activity pub so our communities can thrive.

Ahhh I got you. That makes sense. I guess my job is much the same way, except I get to do it in an office lol

Wow!! That’s absolutely gorgeous and healthy!! I love the color transitions and how all of it fits together so nicely. Definitely showing my wife, we may have to love some plants around! Lol nicely done.

I think Fidelity is cutting those valuations independent of the protests though. I have a feeling they will all (or a lot of them) make a pretty penny. I know my buddy that works there will!

I just worked this last week from home as I was sick… losing my mind! But that could also be because I couldn’t leave the house… lol I don’t know how you all do fully remote!

My team is hybrid, but I try and be in office most days! I’m lucky that my manager doesn’t mind if we do work from home when things come up.

As long as the work gets done, that’s what matters! Which is how I honestly think it should be.

Literally cannot believe this is how they handled things… very sad day! Worst part is, I’m sure they will be just fine and get the IPO they desperately want.

I started with just a $15 clip for my Xbox controller, but after a couple weeks of that I got annoyed at the awkward weight and holding my controller. I ended up spending the money on a gamevice flex because it has bigger thumb sticks and grips than the backbone or kishi. Still around $100 I think, but it was 100% worth it, if not necessary. I’ve also used my switch pro controller hooked up to my iPad. All of the controllers worked flawlessly, just a personal preference thing and value for $.

Like the title says. I know there are a bunch of articles out there for how to setup NVIDIA gamestream, moonlight, remote play, etc. but it still took me days of searching and trial and error and optimizing and blah blah blah to get it setup. It was a pain in the ass! But now it’s freaking awesome.

I have playnite setup to launch in full screen directly from moonlight (it’s the best game launcher I’ve used and the only one I actually like) so I don’t even have to tap or click and can just use my controller. I use sunshine instead of gamestream which was a bit complicated to get working how I wanted it to. And then I use a gamevice flex (my favorite phone attached controller) and an iPhone 14 pro max to play.

I love this setup because I can play while my wife watches tv and I can stream remotely away from home and the quality is fantastic. I streamed across the country and beat horizon zero dawn. Probably wouldn’t recommend that for a competitive shooter or anything, but anything else is fantastic.

Anywho, if anyone would like a full setup guide, let me know! I have pretty much no lag, no stuttering, and it is freaking awesome.
