iPhone 12 Pro.

I don't own it because it's a great experience, I own it for the ecosystem. I use a Mac as my daily driver and an iPad as a reader/tablet. Then I bought AirPods, because they switch easily between all my devices. Then I subscribed to the Apple Music Family Plan where they support spatial audio on said AirPods. The list goes on.

The best phone I ever owned was a OnePlus 7 Pro, but as a Mac user, it was just too much of a hassle.

I have a Motorola Moto G Power 2021 that I use for software testing that I LOVE, but it will never be my primary phone.

"I am one of these people, and I am only getting worse over time, which is why I have converted my smart home to Home Assistant, the home automation solution for true freaks."

I'm OK with that. 🀣

I deactivated all relays and my media storage is settling into the 50GB range of my masto.host plan. It doesn't seem to affect the posts of the people I follow.

There are many add-ons for Home Assistant that do better with more storage. Grafana is a great example. You can expose your HA entities to Grafana and understand trends over time, but you'll need the storage to support it.

Ditto for something like MotionEye that stores your security video.

I set up a personal instance using https://masto.host. It's a small operation that I believe is run by one person. Hugo has been great about responding to my questions.

My instance has only been up for about 3 days and I've exceeded my Media Storage limit twice. The first time, I upgraded to the "Planet" plan which has the added bonus of being more responsive.

This time, I've tried setting my Media Retention Period to 3 days and am hoping that's sufficient.

Do you have any other optimization tips to share? Unfortunately (but also, fortunately), it's a managed service, so I'm limited to only what is available in the Mastodon web interface.

I've just contributed to LemmyNet. Consider supporting them too β€” every little helps! https://opencollective.com/lemmy

I plan to use it to write my nightly backups to my local file server, but yeah, it's probably more for media-focused setups.

All this week, The Verge is reviewing their picks for the top 5 smart home platforms - including Home Assistant.

Their list:

  1. Amazon Alexa
  2. Apple Home
  3. Google Home
  4. Samsung SmartThings
  5. Home Assistant

I’ve persistently used Alexa - but only because I received a bunch Echo devices from a friend and it was easy to set up.

I’m planning to move to a locally controlled voice assistant as soon as I have time to figure it out.

Alexa (and Amazon) is f***ing invasive. I’m tired of it. Plus, I use it only for home assistant control and timers. I don’t need her to tell me jokes. πŸ™„

My daily driver is a MacBook but I have other machines running Windows and Pop! OS (System 76)

If you're running Home Assistant on an SBC other storage constrained device, you can now use available storage elsewhere on your network. Game changer, at least for me. Lots of other updates in this release, too.

Mlem on iOS, for now. Would like to see Jerboa come to iOS.

I'm prepping a custom resume for this role. (Something I never do.) It seems interesting.
