I guess it would cause people to use less bandwidth, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Also, if you were forced to store as many bytes of the network in your device as you had produced in content (or more realistically a multiple of that), you would essentially be paying for yourself.

I actually think that even a federated model is too centralised, because it still has servers as weak points. Imho a model where users host part of their and others' content on the devices they use for viewing would be best. Something along the lines of Gun.js
What I do is search on Google and add site:reddit.com

I like to use https://conifer.rhizome.org . It creates a nice .warc file for you to download. It might work better with the old web version. Also you can click through to all linked images so that it saves them as well
