It's more that they've been in a long demographic decline since the USSR broke up, particularly among ethnic Russians. Of course 300K dead soldiers plus all the people who fled the country altogether sure as heck isn't helping them either.

I've seen enough Ukranian drone drop videos with grenades landing on Russians to know that being on the receiving end is absolutely not immediately lights out.
