Socialism is a series of political movements on top of being an economic theory and our platforms cover more than just said theory. For example, socialists have been in the ring for Palestine since well before October 7th and want to hold the assholes in power accountable for facilitating this atrocity (and past atrocities); as such, it is important to pay attention to who is responsible and why so that when they try to bullshit their way out of accountability, it doesn't work.

As for your other link there, that's just part of a larger series of paying close attention to the behavior and biases of corporate media outlets, which has been a time-honored socialist tradition that even predates when Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky first published Manufacturing Consent in 1988. Such media outlets have large amounts of influence over public opinion and frequently serve as reinforcement for the ideology and politics of the bourgeoisie, so if they're capitulating to US government officials and their nonsense (or are being intimidated into being even less critical of them than they already are), then that is something socialists should pay attention to (because it can, has been, and will continue to be weaponized against us).

Basically, this beehive is a news feed for stuff that would be of interest to socialists and our political goals from preferably leftist news sources, though theory discussion is also welcome (I occasionally post reading lists as well).

BTW, the Fediverse equivalent is called Friendica and it also supports more platform protocols than just ActivityPub.

If you post in public, it can be scraped; that's true on Bluesky as well as the Fediverse and also on the centralized corporate platforms. It's something you have to be mindful of when posting. Using privacy-conscious walled chat apps is the better option for people who want to avoid that, but even those can have leakers in the group chat.

I hear you, and agree it’s unlikely that Lemmy will change the world. But frankly I’m surprised how little faith you have in the platform you help moderate. Why are you doing this if you don’t think what happens here matters?

Even though small internet forums are politically insignificant in the grand scheme of things, certain behaviors/topics can still be annoying for the people who frequent them. Beehaw as an instance is interested in curating a pleasant experience for their users and are simply following through on that by introducing a temporary break from a topic that's prone to ragebait until people have had time to calm down.

Would be nice, but their fanclub seems more interested in blaming everyone else for their humiliating failure this year rather than doing any sort of self-crit or reflection on their dogshit political system, so what they'll probably do instead is just run another uncharismatic shitter and move right. I just hope that there's enough of a demographic shift over the next 4 years that makes it easier for actually good candidates to get into position.

Remember when Bernie Sanders got dismissed as a crackpot Trumpian conspiracy theorist for suggesting that a multi-billionaire owning WaPo influences its coverage? Much like how most of a glacier is underwater, most of the influence is more subtle than this and has been happening behind the scenes for ages; I'm just impressed with how brazen it's getting.

The Pixelfed guy does good work, but video hosting/streaming is the most difficult use-case to compete in due to infrastructure costs; I'm interested to see how he's planning to handle this and I wish him luck.

Occasionally when I'm searching for something, I'll check out some Reddit links and honestly it's a crapshoot as to whether half of the comments have been deleted or not. Useful search results are getting to be a pain to come by.
