That was not a fun week to be a developer.

Not really sure, something about nitrogen runoff maybe? I don't really recall, but I have the memory of a goldfish so I could be way off.

Left pad https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/03/rage-quit-coder-unpublished-17-lines-of-javascript-and-broke-the-internet/

Had GPT summarize what happened.

The "left pad" incident refers to a controversy that arose in 2016 when a developer named Azer Koçulu removed his JavaScript package called "left-pad" from the NPM (Node Package Manager) registry. This caused a ripple effect, breaking numerous projects that relied on this package and highlighting the potential risks of relying on external dependencies. The incident sparked a debate about the stability and trustworthiness of the open-source ecosystem and led to discussions about best practices for managing dependencies in software development.

My town has been doing the same and there's even a program where they will come rip out your lawn and replace it with some kind of wood chip stuff. The town's main water supply is a lake just downhill from our little mountain so they take it pretty seriously. I hate lawn care so I've considered it, but haven't actually taken action on it yet. But I just might. I hate hate hate mowing.

You're a genius.

1000% agree. This is how it should be done. And not hidden away somewhere deep. There are legit reasons for in depth tracking, but when used for advertising or something other than improving the user's experience, count me out.

I am absolutely exhausted with me and my kid's ADHD. My wife is always upset at us because we can't remember shit and I've spent my life feeling guilty because nobody will ever just give me a break.

I'm expected to be "on" at all times and I just can't do it forever. Sometimes I just need to do things my own, likely inefficient way, but at least at home it usually ends in being berated because I didn't do it "the right way".

It's so insanely demoralizing. I don't even want to bother trying at anything because it will only be met with derision. What's even the point. Fuck it all.

Shit like that is why I still dream of disappearing forever to be alone and just left to my own devices.

Thanks for letting me vent. Just so tired.

Oooh awesome. Consider me wrong then! Thanks for sharing the guide!

I believe so, yes. Uploading to an instance/server comes with overhead of storage (cheap, but not free) and lawful moderation of said content. None of which is infeasible, but adds a good bit of complexity. So, links for now I think!

Oh absolutely this. Far far easier. It's a sign of a good dev who can come in and improve things without needing to rewrite everything. That said, refactors are fun as hell.
