So I'm pretty new to self hosting as well, but I use Tailscale. They also have the option of working with Mullvad, though I'm not 100% on how that works. Tailscale is a VPN itself, and it's allowed me to access all of my self hosted stuff everywhere, including on my phone. It's been really nice, though I understand people might not want to use corporate methods.

Gluetun to my knowledge, when I use it, is just for my qbittorrent stack to access my VPN.

If you don't want to use something like Tailscale (there's also a self hosted option called Headscale, and others like Zerotier and I think Netbird?) there's opening ports and using reverse proxies. I would be really careful about that one, but hopefully I've given you some options to look into.

Oh boy my favorite game series!

Admittedly the ones I've played the most are 3, 4 and 5, although I've tried 2 a couple times a while back. I wouldn't mind doing it again, I just don't remember why I kept bouncing off of it.

3 is my favorite, and admittedly I played it at a younger age than I probably should have, as a teenager. I couldn't bring myself to finish it after getting the ending spoiled to me online, but I always had a fondness for the game and I preordered Reload as soon as I could. I will finish it this time. Mitsuru my love.

4 is my second favorite. Kanji and Naoto in particular really always stood out to me and I used to go by Kanji online for a long time. I made a character who spun into an oc with just traits inspired by him too, who is one of my favorites to write.

5 is fine but my least favorite of the bunch, even though I know a lot of people who only like that one. I felt the pacing was poor and the escalation of the severity of what the adults did wasn't really going in order. I also didn't feel any real attachment to the characters, in sharp contrast to the other two games I've played.

It still irks me every time a teacher and student romance comes up, or the times the games have been phobic. I wish we had the option to maybe pick between a masc/fem/androgynous looking protag and slap our own pronouns on them and romance who we wanted out of the options regardless of those selections, but I know that's not ever the game Persona is gonna be. I'm happy they included content warnings at least in Reload.

I don't believe it does, as someone stuck in hoyoverse hell. They "get away with" quite a lot that I'm surprised censors don't challenge them on besides.

I don't know anything about other Chinese games though.

My english lavender almost died, but I realized in time that it was getting too much water. It's thinned out some in the center but seems to be growing outwards pretty well and it's blooming again. I'll take it as a win.

My aloe and haworthia are still going pretty strong! I'll have to take a picture of them sometime. The aloe developed a brown center but is still growing and there are more stalks(?) growing out of the center even, so I think it's okay still?

My mom recently got a tropical hibiscus that I'm not sure I've mentioned before. I'm not a big fan of it, because it blooms one day and the next day the blooms are on the ground.

Man, I love her music so much! Thank you for reminding me of it, I'm gonna go give her a listen again.

The Tetris cover is one of my favorites. I also have a soft spot for the Pokemon and Super Mario Bros one.

I...went back to Path of Exile.

It was originally just to see how things had changed, but a lot changed and it's very different. Not that it answered all of my personal issues with it, but I resigned myself to using a build guide. I've been enjoying it, surprisingly. Enough that, when I haven't been out of the house, I usually play it daily.

Progress is going really slow because I'm not that good at the game anymore. But I also made loot filter sounds that spark joy, and I've been managing even if I'd like to be at endgame. I'm on act 6 out of 10.

My partner is also playing but doesn't have a lot of experience. So I've been trying to help, which makes it more enjoyable to me because I like to teach.

Not sure if I'm fully going back yet. But I like the league mechanic and am having a good time.

Guess who got their computer back??

Finally after having to send the motherboard I had bought back that I had unintentionally broken the pins on, it's together and back at my house and I'm so grateful. I'm glad I had a laptop to lean on but I hated it all the same.

It was a bit of a struggle because the drive with Windows on it wouldn't work for some reason. After messing around with it, I got it to function, but I need to find the time to wipe everything and start over with Bazzite and Windows dual boot. That's a project for later me, though.

I got help for my dog's vet bills, as I'm drowning in money issues currently. It's not a huge chunk of money and I'm spacing their visits out, but Bowser is behind on immunizations and they both need annual checkups. I feel like a really bad pet owner because I'm disabled and don't work, yet have two dogs, but I treat them the best I can. And originally, circumstances were different and I could afford everything much more easily.

But things are okay at this very moment. I hope everyone else has a fabulous week.

I decided to try Zenless Zone Zero. I'm already a Honkai Star Rail player and I used to play Genshin Impact, although I gave up Genshin because I was irritated with how they handle story and characters. I originally wasn't going to try ZZZ, but thought it wouldn't hurt anything. Worst case scenario, I drop it and go back to solely playing HSR.

I'm really enjoying ZZZ's combat, even if I don't feel like I'm doing it "right" or optimally yet. The story is nice so far, I love the Persona vibes it gives me, especially Persona 4. Wasn't expecting that. I got the guaranteed S rank character I wanted (Lycaon!) and I'm skipping the first limited character because... I really don't like the maid outfit thing. It wasn't for me on Noelle in Genshin, and it's not for me here. I love her design otherwise and she's a shark girl with a shark tail, which is super neat. She has a casual outfit I like a lot. Just. Cannot. Do. The. Maid. Thing.

I might pull on the second half banner. But I haven't met the character yet so I have no idea if I want her either. It's a bit frustrating waiting, because my teams are kinda a mess due to lack of characters. But it's okay. The story comes first and that has my interest so far.

I watched a friend play Sea of Stars and really enjoyed it! I hope it's a good adventure for you the rest of the way.

Something to note if you're in it for combat, the difficulty plateaus a bit towards the middle/end. And if you like this one, their other game, The Messenger, is tied to it lore wise, although it's a different genre.

Also the music slaps.

it's been really hot here, but I've gotten into watering all of the outside plants every day (I water my aloe and haworthia once a week) and they seem to be doing pretty well! even the tropical hibiscus, somehow.

I'm especially happy about my lavender and the roses, I've mentioned previously I think that roses are special to me because of my grandmother (my grandfather would grow them in the backyard in these huge rose bushes for her and bring them in) and these are the first ones to ever grow and thrive. they're not purely red roses, but I do really like the pattern on them.

uploading images keeps erroring out and I'm not sure how to put an image in here from imgur, so here's a link to the picture of the lavender and roses instead.

I feel you. I dislike most of the pyro characters honestly! and also, oof, Thoma requires ascension materials from a special huge questline island in Inazuma. he's kind of a pain to level. the pyro four star I like the most is a tie between Gaming and Yanfei. Yoimiya is my favorite 5 star one, and she works well with Thoma, actually.

you can probably guess who some of my favorites are based on profile pic and banner (eventually, anyway, they're both in Inazuma.)

who do you have your eyes on that you want, anyone besides Diluc and Shenhe? I don't know what the banners are currently.

[–] DreamyRin 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

yep! here it is on the steam workshop and I hope it helps you out! if you want the video series too, I can shoot that your way, it doesn't really spoil anything and I didn't know 95% of the mechanics even existed.

live and drink friend!

I didn't realize this community existed and posted my other thread about linux distros in another community, so I'll try rectifying that here.

I'm trying to learn as much about linux as a desktop system as I can before I dive in to installing a distro on my computer. I do have a tiny bit of familiarity with the terminal from having servers running Debian, but those I get a lot of help with. the distro I've chosen is Bazzite, which is based(?) on Fedora if I recall right. I liked the stuff it comes with (I love video games) built in and I like the idea of the atomic desktop setup.

so, what are your tips and tricks for a new linux user? what about outside resources? I've been doing as much digging for articles and videos as I can, but I thought asking the community might be a good idea too. I'm trying to compile these resources for myself and my partner, so that we have stuff to learn from and reference.

as a final question, what got you into using linux over windows or mac?

thanks in advance!

thoughts on arpgs? (self.gaming)
submitted 5 months ago by DreamyRin to c/gaming

to clarify, I mean games like Diablo 4, Path of Exile, and Grim Dawn!

I really love the genre (right next to roguelikes and looter shooters for me, I guess I just like shiny loot a lot hahaha) but I've been feeling kind of lost in it since I quit playing Path of Exile (with over a thousand hours in it) due to not finding the shifting meta builds fun anymore. my favorite build ever in that game (that I had even made myself!) was a tectonic slam juggernaut, and while it was never the best skill, it was an enjoyable one for me. later, things seemed to get more difficult for me to parse in PoE so I never went back. I also never really enjoyed trading, but found playing by myself hard and not as enjoyable since I played with other people at the time.

I've dabbled in Grim Dawn and Last Epoch, but couldn't quite get into them. I keep feeling like I should give them both another go, because I like the genre, but I've bounced off of them multiple times. I also played Diablo 3 briefly but it was at the height of my Path of Exile phase so I didn't really stick with it.

I've been curious about Diablo 4, especially with the summer steam sale potentially coming up soon. most reviews and such I can't find something recent, but I know they had a big update not too long ago. I know a lot of reviews a saw before didn't like it from the start, but I was wondering if anyone who played it could tell me about how it currently is right now.

what arpgs are your favorites, or maybe ones you dislike? what aspects do you like about them? is there something new you'd like to see in the genre, or maybe something that you want to become standardized?

hey beeple! I didn't quite know what to title this, I apologize.

feeling a bit insecure about what would be interesting to post about here on beehaw. so, I thought I'd ask, what kind of posts interest you in the communities you're involved in?

I personally like to learn a lot of things (provided I'm interested in the topic! school was not great for that) and like to learn from other people. for example, I'm recently dipping my toes into linux, and I've started doing things with self hosting (also linux...) as well as trying out new video games and such. I don't have many people to talk about these things with, so I'd like to turn to beehaw for this, but wanted to see if people are generally discouraged by seeing if 1) the same person is posting a lot of topics and 2) that person is a newbie to what they're posting about most of the time.

I know I can't "win it all" per se and have everyone enjoy that kind of thing. just wanted to post a general feeling out thread of how people feel I guess? I came from reddit (unfortunately) and am still trying to grasp what a community like this is open to. since my experience on reddit was not great.

I do want to post some other things and get feedback and possibly stir up discussion if that ends up happening! I'm trying to participate hahaha.

as an additional question, somewhat related, but is there a new hobby you've recently gotten into?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with wifi and didn't love the GNOME layout. I have a new distro picked out, but I just was curious what other people are using in this community. was also wondering what made you fall on your current one.

and maybe as some bonus questions, what are some distros you've tried but didn't like? what about a distro you want to try eventually? I've seen distrohopping is a thing, hahaha.

hello hello!

beeple, I'm wondering what you like to play video games on the most. from cellphones to a custom watercooled pc, what's your favorite?

I grew up a nintendo fan (my first console was a super nintendo) that ultimately shifted towards pc gaming after the wii (and some associated issues surrounding me getting it) because I really love rpgs and the wii didn't have a huge selection that I could find as a kid.

that said, I had a gamecube and playstation 2, and of the two I was partial to the gamecube more. I'd say the gamecube is probably my favorite console, but with the caveat that I started with the super nintendo very young, so I didn't get to play any of the classic Final Fantasy games on it or anything. I got to play those later, and I enjoy them now!

but ultimately I game on pc most of the time (I just dusted off my switch and found Mario Odyssey, so I've been playing that a little while my computer issues get sorted out) and don't feel a pull towards sony consoles any more because they started putting games on steam as well. including Persona, my beloved game series.

what about all of you?

Ava Max - So Am I (www.youtube.com)
submitted 8 months ago by DreamyRin to c/music

I love Ava Max so much! I saw someone else had posted Choose Your Fighter so I chose a different song that other people might not have heard. it's one of her older ones, but I use it for a character I write (like many of her songs, tbh, she's just really good for my inspiration) so I hear it a lot and wanted to share.

was just wondering if anyone had any great homemade breakfast recipes to share! I'm notoriously picky but wanted to start off by sharing my favorite baked oatmeal. a family member got it's recipe from a bed and breakfast, and I'm obsessed with it.

bed and breakfast oatmeal

  • 3 cups oatmeal
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2t baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • mix together and pour into casserole dish
  • bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes

some optional things I've taken to adding are walnuts, vanilla extract, almond extract, and/or cinnamon. if you add the extracts, I would recommend adding a bit more oatmeal to compensate. and if the middle of it doesn't seem quite baked (I've had this issue before when I'm too eager to eat it!) then I would let it sit outside the oven for like 5 minutes or so.

I've also shared these breakfast cookies before as well, but I thought I'd share them again.

anyone else got recipes to share?

Forgive me if this kind of post isn't allowed.

I wanted to ask people what was new going on with their pets, if they had maybe learned something about them, or maybe just gotten one. Just two examples.

For my part, I have two adopted boys (Champion and Bowser) and had to, a couple years ago, move back in with my mom and now we share a house with her and her two dogs. Champion has always had a lot of behavioral challenges, which led to me doing extra work at my previous job to learn how to train him better (I worked at a doggy daycare and we had to also learn how to train dogs.)

But somewhere along the way between moving to a new place and having to work with him to teach him it was okay for the other dogs to play together (among various other things I've had to help him learn), Champ lost interest in most things other than a bit of play outside (he's still a bit rough around the edges there too) and sleeping on my bed. He's very difficult to walk because of his anxiety, too.

However!

Recently he started showing interest in a rope toy and when I picked it up and waved it, he grabbed onto the other end and started to pull. We had a great, really long session of tug-o-war and he was really worn out by the end. I've managed to replicate it several times now and it's given me a lot of hope for not just play time, but that he might be able to do things like walks in the future again.

What's going on in everyone else's pet parent lives?

he's no longer a puppy (but he is the youngest of my dogs at four years old) and named after the Mario character. I wanted something nerdy but that people wouldn't immediately find hard to pronounce or remember.

one of the calmest dogs I've ever met, even though he's part dutch shepherd.

(also don't mind the ttrpg books on the side.)

hello!

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this (sorry if it isn't) but I recently got really interested in selfhosting because I got mad about Spotify for various reasons. I ended up asking for a family member to help make a media server for me, because I was overwhelmed with all the information.

I ended up with Jellyfin, which I really like, but it only has music on it right now. the first song was one that is floating around but was never released, and Spotify keeps deleting it when people put it up. understandable, I suppose, but frustrating.

I have a few other things I'm trying out, I had asked for KitchenOwl and Shiori, as well as PhotoPrism. it's hosted on what I'm guessing is some kind of HP thin client, I wasn't able to get specifics out of the family member. they said that Tailscale was overkill for what I'm doing, but I'm sharing the servers with a partner who's long distance, and I feel better about it than trying to manage exposing stuff to the internet.

I'm not crazy about KitchenOwl so far, and I was considering trying Mealie instead, does anyone have experience with that one?

I started playing with my Raspberry Pi 3, which I had sitting around doing nothing, and I've installed DietPi on that one and a new Raspberry Pi 4. before my family member got involved, I got pi-hole on the RPi 3, but I broke it once, and had to use the bash command before I started understanding what I was doing.

been going between apps, not able to find an RSS feed one I like, but I've managed to figure out Portainer a little, so I'm trying them out one by one.

most recent addition is Homarr, which I'm really enjoying so far! (despite having trouble installing it in Portainer) I like that it has little status icons for if an app is up or struggling. anyone else use a homepage?

I've been eyeing newer hardware for the main server but I don't think it's needed yet, so far I don't seem to need transcoding? but we'll see.

if anyone selfhosts, what's your favorite app you have?

this is Champion! he's a rescue and his face has since healed a bit more from his encounter with demodex mange. he was found on the side of the road in pain and unable to see, and had to go through treatment for most of his time as a puppy.

he has behavioral issues, like resource guarding, and has arthritis already (diagnosed when he was a year old) plus anxiety, but Champ is on medication and doing great! I'll be taking him in to get injection treatment for his arthritis soon too.

I'm just really proud of my little guy (he's thirty pounds) and where he's at, and wanted to show him off. he's my first dog that wasn't a family dog, too.

maybe soon I'll post his brother.
