Users were free to set up multiple subreddits for the same topics, often differing only on a matter of opinion on how the sub should be run.

Lemmy is the same. You're going to have obvious instances where the community makes most sense and attracts the largest population....eg lemmy.ca would naturally have the most populated /c/ontario community. However, should /c/ontario be run in a way that is not suitable to others for any reason, there isn't anything wrong with starting another ontario community on lemmy.ca or even something totally different like sh.itjust.works.

Lemmur is a dead app, use Jerboa for now.

I think with Reddit being down today all those new beehaw users are actually using the instance today
