this thread got me thinking. i was not happy about what plex did as many of you also did not like it. so today i installed jellyfin to test it out. i'm very impressed. the ui is simpler than plex, but i really like it. i found that it isn't exactly free though. to get guide data for live tv you must pay for the guide data, with the lifetime plex pass that was free. so this is a $35/year cost. not a huge issue, but true. the other thing i noticed is the media playback control is not as good as the plex control, but no media app has one as good as plex. need to think about this but i'll probably switch.

I just came here to say hi to a fellow badger! :)
umm??? How does it share this data with respect to its own privacy statements???

M. What information does Plex collect from my Plex Media Server?
Plex does not share information about your Personal Content with third parties. Plex does not collect:
-
Content titles of your Personal Content.
-
Filenames EXCEPT those that may be collected under Debugging Information below.
-
Metadata for Personal Content (e.g., information about the specific file, cover art, subtitles, running length, etc.) EXCEPT to customize viewed content syncing to enhance your account or if you have enabled metadata matching capabilities in which case such data will be anonymously sent to us or you have integrated with a third-party control or playback mechanism that requires us to access your metadata to play the relevant content (e.g., if you use Amazon Alexa to play a particular song or movie from your Personal Content, then our Services may search your Personal Content metadata in order to find and play the song or movie requested.)
AFAIK they don't circulate emails to your contacts, but smart TV makers routinely overstep the boundaries of acceptability and harvest data that should remain private. On LG TVs, for instance, if you insert a USB, the contents of that USB are read and sent back to HQ to further add to the other data they capture about you e.g. watching patterns, which sources you use, which programmes you watch etc. They cash in by leveraging such data. Low TV prices are effectively subsidised by this model.
100% agree, when I received the email I got really bad vibes from the whole thing.
I am sure they will come back and say "ah sorry our bad, we will fix this" but once the trust is broken like this, nah I'll go to jellyfin thanks.
I switched to jellyfin when my internet was dead and I couldn't quite get my content to work.
Jellyfin is decentralized and is 100% free
I haven't found an option that plex has over jellyfin yet
The subtitles bug I get on my ShieldTV is a little weird but after they started pushing live TV with ads, I decided to abandon it.
I have had a lifetime pass since year 2
Œuf I hope this isn’t occurring in Europe…
The sheer quantity of analytics from both Plex clients and servers, regardless of what options you select, is the number one blocked item on my Adguard Home install. Plex is, by no stretch of the imagination, not at all respectful of privacy.
Plex has sadly lost its way, and this year I finally switched over to Jellyfin and it's much better than the subsequent years I've tried to move across. Other than simplicity of exposing your server on the internet, Plex's value proposition has tanked.
Dude, I have been telling y'all Plex is going down fast. Just set up emby or jellyfin and be happy knowing your setup isn't profiting off of you
A self hosted app that isn't self hosted, baffling why people use plex instead of Jellyfin
I hope jellyfin comes fully to samsung tvs soon since the only thing stopping me from moving to jellyfin is my dad uses a samsung tv and I live to far away to go sideload it for him
There's nothing you can do to stop Plex collecting the data, but you can at least stop your friends seeing what you're watching by adjusting the privacy settings.
Wow. This did step.over a line. Disgusting move by Plex.
Scarily, one can opt to receiving the summaries, but I see no tick box for sharing _my_ activity with friends???
You can set it in your profile settings
But it's worrying if it's opt-out and not opt-in - even if they did prompt me to look at it when I first logged in after the added the Friends Discovery thing. Although the disclaimer suggests that for US users at least it might be opt-in, I honestly don't remember what the default was for me.
the fuck?
it's a media server. Why do I want 'friends' involved at all?
Right - it's controlled server side by Plex and so far as I can tell there's nothing you can do. Your friends would have to go in and turn it off in their accounts. It's disgusting.
I guess we're getting pitchforks out then!
What other option do we have? Either stop using it or attempt to get Plex to respond and change their ways.
Plex haven't taken user feedback into consideration for years. They seem to be making universally hated features exclusively.
Your realistic options are to accept Plex as it is, or switch to something else.

Reason I left for emby years ago was because they kept making the UI worse with no option to customize it at all. Came to find out a bit later the reason for that was to push their own stuff on users
I've been a Flex Pass lifetime user since 2018 and I honestly feel like I got my money's worth during that time so I can't complain too much, but I'm absolutely ready to switch. They only focus on money-grab features these days, and playback & subtitle issues are getting worse every update.
I never bothered _too_ much about the privacy stuff, but after they got so "me me me" focused I trust them less with my data.
I'm just waiting for the Jellyfin Tizen-version to be approved (Samsung OS "app store") and once that's done I'm immediately switching.
I have Jellyfin on Chromecast, but unfortunately my TV doesn't supports Dolby Atmos passthrough, so only native apps support it (+ Chromecast is just a bit sluggish)
