Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So how’s it going?

Nobody will care, but I'm struggling to concentrate at work because I bought a new MTB and it arrived sooner than expected.
Here I sit, while it awaits my attention in the garage at home, all by itself in a strange new environment.

I did consider pulling a sickie, but I'm not like that (karma, superstition, etc...). So, I'll put in a leave day tomorrow for a long weekend. Nonetheless, I'm gonna be as productive as a carrot today.

I hate that feeling. Used to get mail delivered to work and sometimes they show up in the morning. Having to wait all day to play with new toys is excruciating.

Get on the bus. Hmm, weird feeling in my stomach, but I did skip breakfast.

Sit down at the office. Ok definitely feeling a bit nauseous now.

Un-ideal.

My kid woke me up at 3:30 this morning for snuggles. I didn't get back to sleep til 6 but he certainly got a sleep 😬

It's struggle town at work today

[–] chrizbie@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I bet the snuggles were nice though

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Nothing like lying in bed with your kid, they are back to sleep, you can't move or it will wake them, and they reach out their leg and loop it over yours, then slowly over the next hour slowly twist themselves around until their heel is kicking you in the face. Brings back memories.

I finally got a VM spun up on one of the servers....I will be setting up my engineering workstation.....so installing software for the next two days (at least)

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The first half made me wonder if there was a new Lemmy instance coming...

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not there yet.....but I am really liking Lemmy, maybe I will look into it in the future. My home server is quite lightly loaded...

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There are lots of people running instances just for themselves. There are pros and cons to it, but I think mostly people do it for fun :).

[–] 2tapry@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Would you recommend running a local server or is there no real point other than the fun factor? Any major benefit?

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think the benefits are just related to you being an admin. E.g. you can block instances, change settings to suit yourself, that sort of thing.

But if it's just you, then for example the "local" feed is a bit useless. The annoying quirks when you're the first person to search for a community will now happen every time you search for a new community, because you're the only person.

And of course when something breaks (and it will), it will be you that has to fix it. So make sure that's fun for you!

There would be other benefits if you weren't just running it for yourself, but had a community. E.g. if you are a subreddit looking to move everyone to Lemmy, then there are advantages to setting up your own subject-specific instance rather than just making a community on an existing instance.

Thanks Dave. I've got the will, the gear, the bandwidth and the skills - just can't see the point at the moment since I don't have a community to support. Happy to support lemmy.nz instead :)

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

All good, happy to have you :)

Morena!

It's almost the weekend! Anyone have exciting plans?

I might take a trip up north to see the new motorway between WW and Puhoi. It's about time I took my bike out again too

[–] ColonialSpore@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Hmmm, good idea. I haven't driven the new motorway.

Spent the last couple of evenings trying to get myself acquainted with Anno. Both times I've found myself back to playing good ol' Rise of Nations again. I'm still to find an RTS game that comes close to RoN...

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I wish I could help you but Rise of Nations was awesome. I guess it still is! I've got no suggestions for anything better. I used to plan LAN with the flatmates but that was an age ago.

Meta by way of Instagram throwing it's hat into the social content aggregator ring: https://help.instagram.com/788669719351544

It's absolutely horrifying to browse. It reads like one of those fake twitters you find in a videogame.

Just a bunch of brand accounts and preselected celebrites all there with carefully crafted jokes about how it's the new place to be

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's previously been a bit of a discussion on it here (but more focused on whether we should federate with them or not): https://lemmy.nz/post/103679

It seems they aren't federating at the beginning so we will see how it gets on. Honestly I thought the beginning would be when they most needed us.

[–] Ozymati@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

It'll be interesting how it's going to play out
