I can't quiet remember but I think he has a us navy background.
I don't know what it is, but it looks like a 70s design.

One thing that struck me, watching Alone In The Wilderness 1 & 2, was how infrequently Dick wore a watch. It makes sense when you think about it, what with him not having to adhere to a strict schedule very often, and frequently doing the type of labor where a watch could be broken or become a safety liability. He only seems to wear a watch when he's not doing any harder labor.
God I love those documentaries; Mr. Proenneke was a real one.
He probably made it himself.
