Just finished the last of this calligraphy practice. Only two mistakes!! I'm quite happy with it. I love the red water colour. :) ( oh dear, the closer I look the worse it looks ) ๐Ÿ˜‚

To a completely uneducated eye, that is so beautiful. I love the energy in each character.

PSA to remind people to not let their mind imagine crazy scenarios.

Friend had been distant all week and not replying to texts so I thought they'd had enough of me or I'd said something wrong.

Sent them a text saying "Hey. If you've got a few free minutes today can you call for a quick chat?" Less than half an hour later they called me and I got to hear about all the crap going on in their life and it cheered both of us up.

Sometimes people just retreat into themselves when life gets hard or hectic and need a friend to draw them out.

Be that friend.

[โ€“] Duenan@aussie.zone 11 points 1 year ago (10 children)

I feel like retreating and I guess I have been hiding away from all my friends and family though last night I reached out to my dad because I felt like I had to finally.

This place is my last bastion of contact with people because Iโ€™m finding it real hard of late and want to hide away and disappear quite honestly.

My pasta

A photo of my shell pasta, mushrooms, chorizo, zucchini, onion, garlic, chives and chilli flakes. I forgot the tomatoes. I called it "everything that was in fridge went into my dish". It tasted way better than it looks.

An early dinner because I was hungry.

Including the early thread with 30 comments, we are still at over double the activity compared to the old r/Melbourne subreddit.

I hope those who don't go to the old sub frequently can find there way here.

[โ€“] RosaliePreistley@aussie.zone 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (8 children)

Reports from a couple of mates who use it say they find this one buddy and slow to load. I assume they're on a phone. Any ideas or can I inform them of improvements.

Still, this place kicks it's butt for content also. The old daily thread seems to be a lot of the same questions people posted as posts before the great reddit blunder of 2023 which would pretty much be instantly downvoted to the bottom. Loud bangs, tailgating drivers, choppers over reservoir etc. I might be exagurating a little, but it's lost its soul nonetheless.

I've finally succumbed to the reddit API changes.

Lemmy is still a bit strange to me, but I think I'm finally getting it to the point of being similar to what I was seeing on Reddit (albeit with much fewer users and therefore less content).

I'm glad to see the Melbourne daily thread be active here.

Seeing how few users there are on Lemmy also makes me feel like I want to be more active?! I was much more of a lurker on Reddit.

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 14 points 1 year ago

Welcome!

I think once any group gets too big a lot of people end up just stepping back and watching. On Reddit I always felt that it wasn't worth contributing, if you didn't get a popular reply on quickly it would end up sinking and no one would see it. The fast and loud people had lots of entertaining conversations, but there was not much space for the slow and thoughtful. You are not the first person to say you lurked on Reddit but felt you could contribute here. ๐Ÿ™‚

Good luck to anyone flying tonight, or tomorrow. Got home in the end, but shit's fucked.

Doggo went nuts when I walked in the door. Was cool.

This morning I met this friendly handsome guy on my walk. He was very happy to make my acquaintance. I think Iโ€™m in love.

Photo description: a chunky and fluffy cat RUNNING up the footpath to headbutt me and get pats.

spoiler

Edit: donโ€™t really appreciate that the website rotated the picture, but whatever

Self-care Sunday has kicked in early with a 7am dry sauna session.

Local gym has an 80 degree dry sauna that is absolute magic. Even more so when it's empty this early and I don't have to listen to people talk shit.

What has everyone else got scheduled in for self-care today?

[โ€“] underwatermagpies@aussie.zone 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

A walk, a mindfullness movement workshop for trans and gender diverse people later. Minecraft for chilling out and skin care. Eating the mega healthy vege stew I made the other day. AA at some stage. Also playing and chilling with my cats seems like self care too.

Spending my Sunday morning doing a job application because it won't happen during the working week. It's rare for good roles to come up in my field and this one sounds perfect, so going for it. I HATE writing cover letters, never been good at it. I open with why the role has appealed to me and anything I write sounds hella corny.

[โ€“] Taleya@aussie.zone 12 points 1 year ago

Lean into it. A cover letter is basically a fucking fanfic about you and the company being besties

Huge turnout for the #Yes23 launch at Trades Hall today, despite the dull weather.

Momentum is gathering and it is wonderful to see!

Vote Yes in the referendum! It's a great step in the direction of implementing the Uluru Statement. My dream is for state and federal governments to have treaties with the First Nations. We could be so much more as a country!

hashing out LED diffuse lighting for the house. Trying to convince His Lordship of the merits of an "Intruder Alert" macro that when triggered turns all the lights blood red and starts playing the imperial march.

Well Jetstar cancelled my flight for no actual reason they could give me. Also, apparently they sent an SMS and email yesterday informing me...I did not receive either, and only checked my flight on account of a comment by @the_procrastinata earlier. My partner, who could have been an old school travel agent in another life, somehow managed to get me a better flight which the staff said was unavailable. Currently spending my $24 dollars of Jetstar food vouchers...

I am now officially stuffed full of curry.

In other good news, bot #001 seems to be doing better after training - has been running for a few hours without crashing & successfuly conducted a test posting. I've promised it a new wi-fi dongle tomorrow if it can manage to stay awake all night and post succesfully, hopefully that will help too ๐Ÿคฃ

Edit: might have spoken too soon, just after I posted this it crashed again. I think it might be related to the code that is supposed to pin the posts which doesn't work (it needs to be updated for the new server edition) so I have gone through and stripped out all the code relating to that process. Finger's crossed that does it.

curry

Image: Curry. So much curry it's crazy one person ate the whole bowl. Chicken and potato massaman curry, with green beans, capsicum & tomato. Served with rice & cucumber raita.

I want to apologise to everyone here about having to put up and read about my side of things.

I know there are probably many others in tough positions and Iโ€™ve probably had too much a winge and complain today.

I should probably just focus on solving the problem and taking it in stride or waiting to solve the problem instead of being so down about all the worst aspects of it all and what it might mean.

Apologies to everyone for the doomposting.

[โ€“] MisssDarylC@aussie.zone 8 points 1 year ago

You don't have to apologise for doom posting, the community is here to offer support and venting is always welcome! I read your previous comment and it sounds like you're in a tough spot! I hope you can find some form of a solution.

sigh

Well washing machine is only half working. Checked again this morning.

Iโ€™ll try just doing drip drying but I donโ€™t know how thatโ€™s going to go with weather this cold.

Last option would be to use a laundromat. Just another burden I have to shoulder.

nicotine craving poemRolled out of bed, got no plans today
Pain in the head, ground my teeth away
Drink my coffee first, now I'm fairly caffeinated
Thinking of the worst, my thoughts R-rated

My meat-vessel
Is not a temple
My heart's a nightclub,
Full of cigarette butts

I quit smoking months ago, no nicotine
But the craving lives on, so addicting
I think that tailors are worse than rollies
Both are gross, neither are great or healthy

I'll still feel sad but the smoke makes it fun
I want the feeling of it in my lungs
I'll still feel bad and the smokes make it true
I want the feeling of one or a few

My meat-vessel
Is not a temple
My heart's a nightclub,
Full of cigarette butts

Lasted one day using the official reddit app. Glad to see Lemmy appears to be legitimately up and coming and an easy format to read posts/comments.

Its either Lemmy or wasting my time with tiktok and instagram reels only now.

The readability of the official reddit app sadly isnt worth putting up with it.

I finished my Lego lambo yesterday and discovered I put one of the diffs backwards. Now the front and rear wheels spin in different directions when you try to push it. Ah well, it's a display model and no one else will ever know.

Very cloudy and sleepy from the codeine today.

Maybe Mr Smeg needs to drive me somewhere with tasty food. We had loaded potato gems last Sunday at Hey Sister.

Not sure what I want today. For now just listening to Blue Juice Radio on PBS. Easily one of the best shows of the week after Stardust, Afterglow, and Riddim Yard.
