I ran BOINC on all my old androids during the pandemic. It was really cool to see that individual tasks running on them were different COVID variations. Felt like I was doing my part haha.

I used to run it. Once, while I was running the screensaver I looked over and the FFT was completely flat, with a repeating "blip" running across it. I'm sure it was just some local signal interference not an extraterrestrial message, but it was very weird and cool to see.
Cool! I really hope they manage to do something with all the analyzed data. Yours might be in there :)
I used to run it on my desktops back in the day, when my rent included utilities and I had Pentium 3 and Pentium 4's just chugging along while idle.
Yeah, same here, i had some old machine chirning away besides my regular one.

I ran seti@home for yyeeeaaarrrssss and some others projet in BOINC, I stopped maybe 10 years ago... It was cool.

Same here! Though I actually prefer the movie over the book and that's not something I say often.
It's been a good while since I last read the book that I can't really remember what the differences between it and the movie are (I have no idea where my copy even is 😅)
Without spoilering the book for anyone.. it had a somewhat less scientific focus than the movie.
Yeah, it was great feeling like I was contributing to something big with many other people. I've done a lot of "folding at home" and some math things, but I've stopped contributing a few years ago as certain projects were closed.
Did they stop due to the Arecibo radio telescope collapsing and not being replaced?
At least reading the wiki article it looks like the problem was more about funding, and that while losing Arecibo was unfortunate, they could have used data from any other telescope:

No, they basically realized that they needed to actually do something with all the results people sent in. They had too much material for them to be able to handle any more so they figured they had to pull the breaks on it all.
Yeah, seti was fun. My PC was not worth spending on folding at home. 😂

I was in in out that project since probably 1998. It was one of longest running.
Nice, I think I joined in 2000. I took breaks for years now and then but had a tendency to start it up again.
Same here. Sad.
It felt like the end of an era. Even if nothing came out of it it still felt like you were actively helping SETI, that felt pretty awesome.
Did they stop the project because they actually found some aliens and accomplished the project's mission? Nah, no way. But imagine if it's true...

Been BOINCing for over a decade, and been earning Gridcoin for it the past few years as well. A great way to get something good out of my equipment and heat my house in winter! There's still tons of great projects to contribute to. Come join us !boinc@sopuli.xyz

I'm guessing a lot. If it's saved, not sure about that. S@h got rid of a lot of their hardware a while back.. without checking if any members wanted to take care of it. Hoping they saved the data at least..
