As long as we are talking about old games that are still the gold standard, how is it possible no one has recreated the giant-god-monster and city management game Black and White yet?! That game was fantastic, and its premise so solid. It seems ripe for replication in more contemporary engines.

I made a Black and White inspired VR prototype three years ago in university. And I believe in the VR space there are several smaller commercial attempts of doing just that, since the control scheme is one of the few that fit so perfectly for VR.

Sadly none of them are really good yet, but my hopes havent completely died yet. No matter if in VR or not.

It's in black and white and good but not like the old game black and white

Theres a handful but Reus is probably the most successful.

@AlexRogansBeta

There is this one: https://fata-deum.com/

I backed it on kickstarter ages ago. Have not played so ymmv, but its meant to be a spiritual successor to the B&W games.

[–] JollyRoberts@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Following links i guess its not released yet. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1330360/Fata_Deum/ looks good on the steam page anyway

Looks interesting but the trailer doesn't really portrait the same spark as black and white. What made BW so interesting was really how charming it was combined with an interaction method that made you feel godly. This has the idea of being a god, but will you interact using godly powers? Or do you just change settings via menus no different than any other Civ like game.

@parrot-party@kbin.social good question. I think there is a demo on the steam page. I don't have it installed but maybe I should to check it out.

Dang this looks SO close to what I'd want. It's just missing big ass creatures.

[–] Faydaikin 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Big-Ass Creatures or Big Ass-Creatures?

[–] croxis@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Check out open black and white.

Think about how awesome a black and white style game would be in VR!

Is there an ELIF version of the instructions? Do I need to install all the things linked on the page? Just some? Just one?

[–] croxis@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't think there is a simple version of the instructions. You could request that they make a build for release. Looks like you can choose any of the options in build. Some are specific platforms, like an android phone build.

I think it's beyond my ludite smooth brain 😂

Ghost of Tsushima can be played from start to finish in a Kurosawa style black and white.

OP was referencing the ~~Will Wright~~ Peter Molyneux game Black & White.

[–] Vordus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Peter Molyneux. Will Wright created SimCity and The Sims. Peter Molyneux created Black & White and Populous (and Fable, and Dungeon Keeper, and Theme Hospital, and honestly he had a really fucking good run until he disappeared up his own arse and then returned as a grifter).

[–] MagicShel@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

I never played Theme Hospital, but I spent so much time on the rest of those... Populous was so much fun. B&W was similar conceptually, but the kaiju aspect made it feel different. Slapping imps in Dungeon Keeper was fun all by itself, let alone the rest of the game. Fable was fine but I was more into other stuff at the time. I don't think I played very far into it.

[–] spedswir@vlemmy.net 2 points 2 years ago

Close, but it's Peter Molyneux

[–] eunuchkim@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 years ago

I wish someone would!! Maybe if we bring it up enough, the ether will listen and give us an indie version or something

[–] Coskii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 years ago

It's the perfect game type for VR as well. There have been a couple "you are a god" games already, but none of them are close to what black and white was.

[–] Butterbee 2 points 2 years ago

I would LOVE to sling spells around and pet my creature in a black and white clone in vr. Of on flatscreen.

[–] Helldiver_M@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There's the greatest mystery game Return of the Obra Dinn, made by the creator of Papers Please: https://store.steampowered.com/app/653530/Return_of_the_Obra_Dinn/

The default style is in greyscale, but there are alternative styles including one that looks like a Commodore 64.

[–] silmathoron 8 points 2 years ago

I think they were not talking about the visual style of the game but a gameplay similar to the god game called Black & White
